BillF Posted February 6, 2010 Author Report Posted February 6, 2010 Gil Evans and Orchestra Live in Lugano A superb DVD: audio and visual quality unsurpassed and the music is great! I've always dug the latter-day Evans orchestras: I saw the Svengali group at Manchester's Free Trade Hall in 1978 and own most of the Sweet Basil recordings. This one was recorded in 1983 and features Randy Brecker, Lew Soloff, Howard Johnson, John Clark, Mike Manieri and Billy Cobham. So good that a band like this has been so excellently preserved in this DVD! Quote
BillF Posted February 17, 2010 Author Report Posted February 17, 2010 Miles Davis Quintet - Milan 1964 Poor visual and audio quality offset by the magic of seeing this band in action. Tremendous rapport between its members and rapt atmosphere of quiet concentration which must have been unusual at the time outside the realms of classical music. All sorts of visual interest - e.g. that the top of Miles's head doesn't reach Ron Carter's shoulder and that Miles has a strange mannerism of dropping the horn and jabbing the side of his head wth his right index finger between phrases (just as in this photo). He's also seen adding some treble notes to Herbie Hancock's playing - with his left hand! - while reaching with his right hand for his mute on the piano top! Quote

Free For All Posted February 25, 2010 Report Posted February 25, 2010 A Great Day in Harlem The story of the making of the legendary 1958 photograph. One thing that cracked me up- on the portion with all the interviews they apparently felt it necessary to supply Art Blakey with subtitles. Quote
