brownie Posted November 5, 2009 Report Posted November 5, 2009 From AFP... Jazz saxophonist Joe Lovano injured in Spain (AFP) – MADRID — American jazz saxophonist Joe Lovano has been taken to hospital in Spain after injuring his shoulder in a fall, organisers of the Madrid Jazz Festival said Wednesday. Lovano, 56, considered one of the best saxophonists around today, cancelled a concert he was to have given to open the festival Wednesday night. He suffered a slight injury to his shoulder in a fall in the northeastern city of Barcelona, the organisers said. The November 4-28 Madrid Jazz Festival features a 50th anniversary tribute to Miles Davis' "Kind of Blue" album with the participation of Jimmy Cobb, the only surviving member from the original recording. Others scheduled to perform are saxophonist Roy Hargrove, pianist Brad Mehldau and singers Madeleine Peyroux and Cassandra Wilson. Copyright © 2009 AFP. All rights reserved Quote
EKE BBB Posted November 5, 2009 Report Posted November 5, 2009 He also had to cancel his concert in the Barcelona Jazz Festival (Luz de Gas club) and has announced that his upcoming European Tour will probably be cancelled. Quote
John Tapscott Posted November 5, 2009 Report Posted November 5, 2009 Sounds like more than a "slight" injury to his shoulder. Get well Joe. You are truly one of the bright lights on today's jazz scene. P.S. A Lovano concert I attended nearly 10 years ago (just Joe on tenor with bass and drums for 2 hours) stands out as one of, and perhaps THE greatest live jazz experience I have ever had. And I got to talk to him after the concert. A real friendly cat. I enjoy many of Joe's recordings, but he's one of those musicians whose greatness really comes through when heard "live." Quote
7/4 Posted November 5, 2009 Report Posted November 5, 2009 Get well soon Mr. Lovano! I hope he didn't break anything. Falling and breaking bones is a bitch, it takes a while to get better. I'm still there man! . Quote
JSngry Posted November 6, 2009 Report Posted November 6, 2009 Hard to do when you can't practice... Quote
save0904 Posted November 6, 2009 Report Posted November 6, 2009 Best wishes Joe, come back soon! Quote
gmonahan Posted November 6, 2009 Report Posted November 6, 2009 I only recently discovered the great records he's made with Hank Jones (yeah, I'm slow). He strikes me as a guy who both understands and appreciates the history of the music without being overly bound by it--in other words, a really fine jazz musician. I wish him a speedy recovery! gregmo Quote
Guest Bill Barton Posted November 6, 2009 Report Posted November 6, 2009 And my best wishes too for a full and speedy recovery to Joe, one of the nicest people I've ever met as well as being a helluva fine musician. Quote
jazzbo Posted November 6, 2009 Report Posted November 6, 2009 I've met Joe too. Sure seemed like a great guy. Quote
Guy Berger Posted November 6, 2009 Report Posted November 6, 2009 Amen, I hope he recovers... plenty of other great music to play. Guy Quote
AllenLowe Posted November 7, 2009 Report Posted November 7, 2009 genuinely nice guy - any news on his condition? Quote
Victor Christensen Posted November 7, 2009 Report Posted November 7, 2009 Get well Joe One of my favorite is his "52nd Street Theme" where IMO he pays tribute to Tadd Dameron. Vic Quote
danasgoodstuff Posted November 7, 2009 Report Posted November 7, 2009 i've been struggling with a back injury which makes playing v. painful, not that we're in the same league, so my heart totally goes out to him...seen/heard stuf by him I loved and some not - doesn't really matter in this context. 7/4 Posted November 8, 2009 Report Posted November 8, 2009 What a coincidence, I did that 12 weeks ago...hurts like a bitch. Someone else had to feed me for 6 days. I wore a splint on my left arm for 11 days. Three weeks or so until I could drive. I hope he's in better shape than I was. Get well soon Joe! . Quote
