brownie Posted February 14, 2010 Author Report Posted February 14, 2010 Lester Young was part of the Norman Granz stable which was affiliated to the Europe 1 radio station. Europe 1 was very much jazz oriented at the time and taped a Prez broadcast with Oscar Dennard and René Urtreger in March 1959. The tape has not surfaced yet and since Europe 1 tends to ignore jazz altogether nowadays, there is very little chances that the session will reappear any time soon. Quote
brownie Posted February 14, 2010 Author Report Posted February 14, 2010 No parades indeed, but - just in case - did you see the stuff they filed under Bernard Pfeiffer? Of course, very interesting music there. I should not have been surprised by the absence of Peiffer on those Piano Parade broadcasts since the show got its start at about the time he left for the United States! Quote

brownie Posted February 15, 2010 Author Report Posted February 15, 2010 Another broadcast by Lester Young live from the Europe 1 radio station in 1956. Image taken by photographer Jean-Claude Bernath who was a frequent visitor at the radio station at the time. Europe 1 only released the tapes of the concerts they organised (the Jazz Messengers, Thelonious Monk, Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Gerry Mulligan, Jimmy Giuffre, etc...) on their Trema-Europe 1 label but none of the sessions they recorded in the Europe 1 studios off the Champs-Elysees. Our loss! Quote

Niko Posted April 6, 2010 Report Posted April 6, 2010 apparently there's a new type of project at ina with lenghty interviews up for streaming... so far only one jazz entry, 9 hours of Martial Solal, given my level of french, the best news to me is that there are transcriptions for reading along... http://www.ina.fr/grands-entretiens/video/Musique/Solal Quote

brownie Posted October 12, 2010 Author Report Posted October 12, 2010 Out in the next few weeks, there will be a single CD Jazz aux Champs-Elysées that will include unreleased music that was broadcast from 1955 to 1959 on the French RTF program of that name. The CD will include music by Lester Young, Chet Baker, Stan Getz, Stéphane Grappelli, Blossom Dearie and others. It will part of the INA Mémoire séries that already produced the 2CD Jazz sur la Croisette compilation. Quote
brownie Posted October 14, 2010 Author Report Posted October 14, 2010 INA announcement (in French) on the release of the Jazz aux Champs-Elysées CD. Jazz aux Champs-Elysées Glad to see the album will also include material from Lucky Thompson. Quote
AllenLowe Posted October 14, 2010 Report Posted October 14, 2010 unless I've forgotten my French, they seem to be reissuing the Piaf/DeGaulle/Vichy recordings with James Moody and Coco Chanel. Quote

Other Jazz aux Champs-Elysées broadcasts that have just been added include performances by Bobby Jaspar, Kenny Drew, Donald Byrd, Jean-Luc Ponty and others... INA audios Quote

brownie Posted November 5, 2010 Author Report Posted November 5, 2010 there is also billie holiday live from 1958! last week it was possible to see the entire 5 minute clip.... keep boppin´ marcel Missed that when it was posted. Thanks for catching this, bichos! Will include the full clip in my next DVD from INA. The accompanying text is wrong. This was not filmed during her dramatic appearance at the Olympia but a few days later (probably at le Moulin de la Galette) when she looked much better! Quote
brownie Posted November 9, 2010 Author Report Posted November 9, 2010 This week, INA also added images from its archives. Some interesting ones in the jazz section! Type 'jazz' in the Recherche window! Couple of samples... Miles Davis recording the music to 'Ascenseur pour l'Echafaud' Thelonious Monk enjoying a soft drink at the bar of the Olympia Theater. Quote
bertrand Posted November 9, 2010 Report Posted November 9, 2010 I finally got a DVD player which will allegedly have no issues with regions etc. So I want to buy the Jackie McLean Chat Qui Peche video. How do I proceed? Has anyone bough this one? Thanks, Bertrand, Quote
Hardbopjazz Posted November 9, 2010 Report Posted November 9, 2010 I tried too buy some myself, albeit my French is non-existent, I sent an email asking how to buy. I never received a reply. Has anyone in the US been able to purchase from this place? Quote

How do I proceed? Has anyone bough this one? Thanks, Bertrand, I know of at least two people from the US that bought DVDs from INA and were satisfied. They have some knowledge of french and managed to order without problems. Since you speak the language you should have no trouble at all getting what you want. The McLean is a bit short on time. I am sure you will find other items of interest in the INA jazz vaults to fill a DVD. The McLean by the way was not taped at Le Chat Qui Pèche... Looks more to me like a French TV/Radio studio! Quote
prozat Posted November 14, 2010 Report Posted November 14, 2010 Miles Davis recording the music to 'Ascenseur pour l'Echafaud' Actually, this is not really Miles Davis recording the music to "Ascenseur", but rather Miles pretending to do so. In fact, the picture has been taken during a reconstitution of the session, shot for the TV show "Cinépanorama". You can see the full video here You can see very clearly that Miles' lips are not synchronized with the music, and they are no other musicians around him. Very beautiful pictures, though! Quote

Other Jazz aux Champs-Elysées broadcasts that have just been added include performances by Bobby Jaspar, Kenny Drew, Donald Byrd, Jean-Luc Ponty and others... INA audios It seems that there is a lot more "Jazz aux Champs-Elysées" audio available now: Herb Geller Donald Byrd & Bobby Jaspar Kenny Drew Eric Dolphy Jean-Luc Ponty (over 2 hours, including duets with Svend Asmussen!) Oddly enough, some of these files are available at the Ina boutique, but do not appear when you type "Jazz aux Champs-Elysées" or the artist's name in the search field... Quote
brownie Posted November 15, 2010 Author Report Posted November 15, 2010 Thanks for the comments. Proves it is worth checking with the INA site to check on the new items they offer! Quote
prozat Posted November 26, 2010 Report Posted November 26, 2010 Again, new "Jazz aux Champs-Elysées" stuff to discover on Ina.fr: - New audio material by Toots Thielemans and Lucky Thompson (including a quintet featuring Bill Byers). - Videos from various TV shows produced by Jack Diéval. These include four-hands piano performances by Diéval together with Blossom Dearie and Kenny Drew, a fabulous Quintet with Woody Shaw and Nathan Davis, a quartet performance with Pearcy Heath and two stunning solo piano pieces by Duke Ellington himself!
