The very official INA (Institut National de l'Audiovisuel) is opening its jazz vaults this week.

This includes about on hundred hours of video and audio archives.

Some of the rarely seen video can already be seen now:

- the Duke Ellington Orchestra at Salle Pleyel in November 1958

Duke Ellington et son Orchestre

- the Quincy Jones Orchestra in March 1960

Quincy Jones Big Band

- a Daniel Humair show in 1961 with Jackie McLean

Daniel Humair special show

- Roland Kirk in 1970

Roland Kirk

- Sun Ra in 1972

Sun Ra

- Jazz Giants (Dizzy, Getz, McLean, Eckstine, Max Roach, etc...) honored

Jazz Giants honored

and there is a lot more...

The videos can be downloaded or transferred to DVD at reasonable costs.

Better read french if you want to upload any of these

I never thought this would happen!!!

Is this permanent?

Bertrand.

By permanent, I mean did they clear the rights? There were some problems years ago with some CDs they put out - someone had forgotten to get permission.

6 euros is a bargain.

INA say it is all legal. They claim they cleared the legal problems with the various rights holders and musicians unions.

But I have not seen any footage or audio of Charles Mingus yet. However there are a couple of Erroll Garner videos available.

This to mention a couple of musicians whose estates are notoriously difficult to deal with!

The only Thelonious Monk video available is this famous 1969 interview. With the great story about Monk and Bud traveling together.

Bud, Pierre Michelot, Klook, CT, Barney Wilen - 1959, Club St. Germain

Everyone's in top form. If Barney Wilen wasn't checking out Johnny Griffin I'll eat my beret.

Too bad the preview of the Daniel Humair Show didn't include any JMac.

Hilarious to watch Monk's interviewer futilely trying to get Monk to agree with him that Round Midnight and Crepescule With Nellie are his two single masterpieces. When Monk replies he likes them all equally, the interviewer tells Monk, "then you must think that everything you write is stamped with genius," to which Monk says "merci beaucoup."

1) Monk and Bill Evans were the estates with which there were problems 10 years ago, IIRC.

2) I know they have a Hutcherson/Land video from Antibes 1969; I hope that pops up.

Bertrand.

P.S. Message edited to remove reference to a posting that was deleted.

1) In that segment from Nancy in 1979 (including a snippet of the Shepp big band playing a Cal Massey tune), the guy with the handlebar mustache makes a statement that comes off as borderline racist.

2) For 4 euros, you can buy an 11 minute video of Jackie Mac in the early 60s playing 'Francisco', 'Lover Man' and 'Minor March'. If I get the DVD, will it play on a player in the U.S.?

Will let you know after I ship an INA DVD to a friend in the States. He had too much trouble getting it from INA direct.

The INA operator I talked to could not answer the question!

I have seen the Marlene footage before but not the Django Reinhardt sequence! Too bad there is no sound for the Django's.

A Tabarin on Danse le Jitterbug.

The January 1, 1944 date for the film is generic. This was filmed in late 1944 after the Liberation of Paris!

I have heard that one but never saw it...

... and now the Great Bud Powell with Jean-Marie Ingrand on bass and Kenny Clarke on drums from the Blue Note club. The sequence is introduced by Raymond Mouly.

I've had the video of this for years but never synchronized properly with the music. Thanks for posting this Brownie!!

Would love to see more Sun Ra from that early 70s period.
