jostber Posted November 8, 2009 Report Posted November 8, 2009 Here is the link to Sun Ra's "New Steps", coming out in 9 days: http://www.amazon.com/New-Steps-Sun-Ra/dp/...9348&sr=1-5 Quote
Joe Bip Posted November 8, 2009 Report Posted November 8, 2009 (edited) $19.98? Ridiculous. Buy.com has it for $13.99. A little too soon to tell what DustyGroove's price will be. Edit: While I was posting on the subject of Sun Ra, I thought I'd mention info about the new releases from Norton but now I see jostber has already posted about them in the Sun Ra Corner. king ubu Posted November 9, 2009 Report Posted November 9, 2009 So the label is 101 Distribution? Anyone knows anything about them? Google brings up a couple of hits but they fail to load: http://101d.com/ http://www.101distribution.com/ Quote
jazzbo Posted November 9, 2009 Report Posted November 9, 2009 Seems more like an importer/distributor than a label per se? They handle a lot of European bootlegs, among other things. Doesn't bode well for the legitimacy of these releases. http://www.amazon.com/gp/search/ref=sr_nr_...;qid=1257782632 Quote
RDK Posted November 9, 2009 Report Posted November 9, 2009 I suppose it will all depend on whether these are needle drops or from the master tapes. Quote
mjzee Posted November 10, 2009 Report Posted November 10, 2009 They appear to be the original Horo covers. The Andorrans generally don't do that. Quote

If I can get these first six for $120 (including free shipping), I'm a happy camper. I've never heard any of these sessions, and $120 wouldn't even buy me two of the LPs. I guess I'm just resigned to paying a premium for my niche lifestyle. Quote

king ubu Posted November 10, 2009 Report Posted November 10, 2009 JazzBeat, JazzTrack... there are some others, too. Lonehill and Gambit often do as well. Fresh Sound and Definitive rarely included original covers, though. Quote
Niko Posted November 10, 2009 Report Posted November 10, 2009 more info from here: http://dearbornmusic.com/cart/jazz/shepp-a...prod_27242.html seems these reissues are not one LP per CD Shepp, Archie - Mariamar 1 MARIAMAR 13:41 2 TRES IDÉIAS 7:36 3 THE MAGIC 10:03 4 SHEPP’S MOOD 8:22 5 BODY AND SOUL 8:31 6 TROPICAL 8:56 Total time: 57:09 ARCHIE SHEPP, tenor & soprano sax CHARLES GREENLEE, trombone CICCI SANTUCCI, trumpet IRIO DE PAULA, guitar ALESSIO URSO, bass AFONSO VIEIRA, drums Rome, Italy, October 16 (tracks 1-5) & September 28 (track 6), 1975. This set consists of Archie Shepp’s complete session accompanied by a mixture of Brazilian and Italian musicians plus trombonist Charles Greenlee, recorded in Rome, Italy, on October 16, 1975. It is issued here for the first time ever on CD! This was the second out of three sessions recorded by Shepp for the Italian label Horo, which were subsequently issued on the albums Jazz a Confronto #27, Body and Soul, Mariamar and The Tradition. While the first three albums contained the results of two sessions (those of September 28, 1975 and of October 16, 1975), The Tradition included a single Rome session taped on October 12, 1977. The session of October 16, 1975, included here in its entirety, produced five titles (tracks 1-5 of our CD), which originally appeared on the albums Mariamar (“Mariamar”, “Tres Idéias”, “The Magic” and “Shepp’s Mood”) and Body and Soul (“Body and Soul”). The latter album also included “Dogon”, by Shepp and his American group, recorded on September 28, 1975 (the three titles produced by the group on this date can be found on our companion volume Lybia (Atomic Records 76811), and “Tropical”, the fourth title taped that day. As “Tropical” was performed by the exact same formation as the October 16 session, we have included it here at the end of this CD for the sake of continuity. __________________________________________ Shepp, Archie - Lybia 11/09/09 1. The fourth title from that session, “Tropical”, featured Shepp with a mixture of Brazilian and Italian musicians plus trombonist Charles Greenlee. As this group would record the complete October 16, 1975 session, “Tropical” has been included with that date on our companion volume Mariamar (Atomic Records 76810 Quote

JETman Posted November 17, 2009 Report Posted November 17, 2009 I'm afraid that these ARE boots. They have the same exact "First time on CD" sticker that appears on a variety of other Andorran (Lone Hill, Gambit, RLR, etc.) releases. Quote
Stefan Wood Posted November 17, 2009 Report Posted November 17, 2009 I hope these issue are legit and related to what's below. Back in February, I did an entry about Horo on my blog and got the following comment: I was assistant producer at HORO Records for several years, when I was in my teens. Aldo Sinesio, the producer, is on the verge of reissuing most of the HORO catalogue on CD, and I will produce the reissues. Lonehill Records has just ripped off a Teddy Wilson record from HORO, so, in order to avoid other "fakes" (the guys at Lonehill have just copied an LP), the catalogue wll be reissued almost in its entirety. Within May/June a series of recordings live by Freddie Hubbard, and an unissued recording, by pianist Dave Burrell and legendary drummer Sam Woodyard, will be out. I think you're the first person to get the news... Cordially yours, Gianni Morelenbaum Gualberto Of course, we're considerably beyond May/June at this point, but I hope this is the beginning of the reissue program Gianni was talking about. Again, we have to refer to this quote -- are they boots? Don't know yet. Quote

Stefan Wood Posted November 17, 2009 Report Posted November 17, 2009 Not proof based on a sticker. Did you buy them? Quote
JETman Posted November 17, 2009 Report Posted November 17, 2009 Not proof based on a sticker. Did you buy them? How would I know about the stickers if I didn't buy them? When I say EXACT same stickers, I mean EXACT same stickers. Also the liners were written by someone with a name I recognize (probably a pseudonym) from any of the other Andorran bootlegs' liner notes. I am 99.999999999999999999999% certain these are boots. I'm no shrink, but it sounds like there could be a little bit of denial going on here. I was just trying to be helpful, and save the moral majority some trouble and some bucks. Quote
JETman Posted November 17, 2009 Report Posted November 17, 2009 Ask Chuck how difficult it is to start a reissue program legitimately in today's economic climate. The owners of Horo may mean well with their intentions, but does anyone really believe they are going to release their entire catalogue on cd? Quote

jazzbo Posted November 17, 2009 Report Posted November 17, 2009 Yes, maybe they saw the post annonuncing Horo's intentions (which mentioned that Lonehill had already "ripped off" the Teddy Wilson and Horo was trying to get ahead of the bootleggers) and decided to make an effort to get their boots out first. It's quite an interesting world we're in and as collectors we're going to face interesting situations. We're not normal people with normal needs. Quote
David Ayers Posted November 17, 2009 Report Posted November 17, 2009 FWIW I never got a reply to my mail to what purports to be the Horo website. Quote
