I've been to all these places, but never had any time to explore. Probably won't have more than an hour a week this time. But glad to have live music or shopping recommendations. (Shopping recommendations can include really overpriced places, since I never actually BUY anything!...until Jim's new recording comes out, that is.)

I've seen the Raleigh-Durham thread and a couple on Atlanta. Some good info, but a bit dated too.

Back to Charlotte, May 11-18. Aware of the websites Charlotte Viewpoint, Charlotte Culture Guide, Charlotte's Got a Lot. Perusing these. Won't have much time, but would like to do one thing - something - anything. Whatever.

Meal is fine suggestion, but I'm strict vegetarian. Most veg options seem to be outside of Uptown area where I'm working.

The Charlotte amusement park called Carowinds has a new roller coaster this year which I think is the world's highest.

I used to know Charlotte well. It has been fifteen years, and the entire town has changed. Especially uptown!

I hate to say it, but Charlotte doesn't seem to realize that jazz even exists.

I know you aren't in the market for CDs/LPs, but Manifest Disc and Tape on South Blvd is still one of the best on the east coast. It sits inside an old grocery store and the dollar bins are very well stocked. Most of my ECM LPs were purchased there and cost me a dollar a piece.

Thanks for the tip, impossible. I took an easy trip down the Blue Line light rail to ManiFest.

Frankly, it was disappointing vis-a-vis my most recent visit, about four years ago. About 200 new CDs; 200 used CDs. The new were all light/pop/smooth. Of the used, I'd say 194 "smooth" and 6 actual jazz. And $24 for a used 2-CD Keth Jarrett Standards Trio set (paper sleeve in iffy condition) didn't strike me as much of a bargain.

The LP section seemed a little more happenin', but I can't buy LPs. (I'm traveling, so anything I buy, I listen to for a week then discard. No turntable.) I didn't do any vinyl digging.

Still, the people there were nice and it got me out of the office for an hour Sunday mid-day. Nice weather too. And I like going to record stores. So, even though I came away empty-handed and full-walleted, I appreciate the suggestion.

Yes, I remember the used jazz cd section to be very smooth overall. Glad you were able to get away. It's been a few years now since I've been to Manifest. I spent a lot of money there as a kid in my twenties.
