Saw that. Sounds like it could be an interesting read.

The tennis academy that he attended in his younger years is a fairly well-regarded outfit located here in town. A fair share of tennis names maintain residences here -- Navratilova, Haas, Sharapova among them -- so I'm sure the book will be of some interest locally.

He seems like a straight shooter now. I think it's a mistake to judge people by their excesses alone.

I remember 1997 being a particulary bad year for him, especially when he slipped to 141 in the world; his wrist injury was no help either. What I'm interested in knowing is whether he started out with something like pot or just went directly to meth. I mean meth has got to be one of the worst drugs to do, given its highly addictive nature and how it can ruin lives. Seemingly, Agassi pulled it together and managed to not let it take over his life.

I know this chick who said she first used speed when she was given it by her high school cross country coach (!) to help her be "skinnier and faster." It's amazing how crap finds its way to those who you would think would be the most health-conscious, most anti-drug types imaginable.

Speed is not meth, however. That shit is rough.

Faces of Meth

Meth is speed. You sound confused.

Yes and no. I'm guessing the form of speed referred to in Noj's post was something more along the lines of benzedrine, cross tops, if you will. That's miles away from meth.

Up over and out.

Good point. I missed that.

All speed is not meth, however...all meth is speed.

No matter the category, it's weird for cardio-vascular primed athletes to use the sort of creepy chemical drugs which are known to be so physically (and mentally) risky and damaging.

Yeah, meth is serious shit, but this attitude that once anyone touches it they're immediately addicted, loose all their teeth and age fifty years in a week is just more of the same old bullshit anti-drug claptrap. It convinces people who have never been around drugs, but that's about it. A little honesty in drug education just might be a bit more effective.

Of course, if Agassi lost all his teeth, I stand corrected...

Oh, I know another chick who smoked "glass" for years before kicking the habit a few years back. She's got all sorts of other problems, mainly with her spine and a new addiction to painkillers, but she's got a hot body and a pretty face. If I didn't know, I wouldn't know.

The general tone of commentary from the sports talking heads on this today seemed to be along the lines of, "What purpose does it serve for him to admit this now?" As if they were offended to have to learn about it, which seems a selfish perspective.

Because he is involved in education initiatives for children, the subtext of this line of thinking seems to be, "Why do the children have to know this?" (Too many conversations in this country seem to revolve around, or are tailored to protect, the fragile sensibilities of children. Bah!)

Without knowing the details (was it a few times or habitual?) Agassi obviously feels it is part of his larger story. An obstacle he overcame. Owning up to the difficult truths about oneself shows a certain maturity, I think. Maybe the children will be inspired.

Remember the old Hollywood adage, "You can say anything you want about me as long as you spell my name right." I'm guessing Agassi knows exactly what he's doing. The run up to the release of his book couldn't have been orchestrated any better. As a result, he's going to sell a ton of books. I'll bet you right now this will be #1 on the NYT non-fiction best seller list within a week of its release.

Up over and out.

Well, I hope he knows what he's doing. You start out publicizing, then before you know it you're marketing, then advocating, and if you don't get help, pretty soon you end up running for office...

... and develop yet more nasty habits ...

I thought it was funny was the emphasis on the "crystal" part. When some hillbilly does it it's just "meth," but Agassi did crystal meth. Yummy! Which reminds me, what the hell ever happened to Crystal Pepsi? Aside from taste perhaps they had bad timing with the name.
