B. Clugston Posted October 22, 2009 Report Posted October 22, 2009 ESP just tweeted this: @espdisk: We just got word that Sirone passed away in Berlin. His music touched all of our lives. RIP !!!!! A MAJOR LOSS. Quote

RIP !!!!! A MAJOR LOSS. That is too bad. I understood he was quite a fisherman, as well as being a fine bass player. This biography and discography looks fairly complete to me. http://www.jazz.com/encyclopedia/sirone-jones-norris-sirone Of the great Revolutionary Ensemble trio only Jerome Cooper is still with us. Clunky Posted October 22, 2009 Report Posted October 22, 2009 I managed to see him perform many years ago as part of a Billy Bang group with Frank Lowe in the late eighties. A sublime gig which drew me to jazz .RIP Quote
AndrewHill Posted October 22, 2009 Report Posted October 22, 2009 This is sad news. Dig his Live disc that Atavistic put out a few years back, plus the ESP dates he appeared on. RIP Quote
clifford_thornton Posted October 22, 2009 Report Posted October 22, 2009 I saw him with the re-formed Revolutionary Ensemble a few years ago. It was great, and he sounded tremendous. He had a broader sonic conception than he's given credit for. Artistry is a great LP that demands reissue. Quote
mjzee Posted October 22, 2009 Report Posted October 22, 2009 I caught the Revolutionary Ensemble once at Studio Rivbea; bought my copy of The Psyche at that gig. RIP. Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted October 22, 2009 Report Posted October 22, 2009 Sorry to hear this. Many memories including his playing with Cecil, Jimmy and Andrew - a CT favorite quartet. Quote
Christiern Posted October 23, 2009 Report Posted October 23, 2009 A sweet man, sad to see him go. When I met Sirone, he had a loft-type apartment on West 31tst Street. Cecil Taylor had the apartment below him. I think that's how I met Sirone. Quote
JSngry Posted October 23, 2009 Report Posted October 23, 2009 Never heard or felt an untrue note from him. TIP. Quote
JohnS Posted October 23, 2009 Report Posted October 23, 2009 Sadly never had the opportunity to see Sirone live. But he was on numerous records (some as Norris Jones) that influenced my listening back in the 60s. Quote
mikeweil Posted October 23, 2009 Report Posted October 23, 2009 (edited) Sad news. I didn't know he lived in Berlin, or I would have watched out for gigs in Germany. I first heard him on Sharrock's debut LP, and then on Dewey Redman's The ear of the Behearer - nice big sound. Edited October 23, 2009 by mikeweil Quote
brownie Posted October 23, 2009 Report Posted October 23, 2009 Met him when he was still known as Norris Jones and playing with the Marion Brown quartet at the start of his career. Reacquainted with him when he showed up with Pharoah Sanders in 1968 at the Antibes-Juan les Pins festival. An impeccable musician and a gentleman! Quote
AndrewHill Posted October 23, 2009 Report Posted October 23, 2009 Another for Ear of the Behearer-Sirone's musicianship on that album is amazing. Quote
P.L.M Posted October 23, 2009 Report Posted October 23, 2009 Too sad. I've seen him few times (with the Revolutionnary Ensemble in the seventies and Cecil Taylor). What is strange is that he died just after he had anounced that he was going back to his real name. Maybe he was knowing that he didn't have much time to live ahead of him? Quote
charlesp Posted October 23, 2009 Report Posted October 23, 2009 (edited) Listening to The People's Republic on A&M Horizon in honor of Sirone......I recognize Sirone's influence on William Parker - see "Chinese Rock". Edited October 23, 2009 by charlesp Quote

Late Posted May 12, 2022 Report Posted May 12, 2022 You can listen to the whole album here. Anyone here have the vinyl? James Newton sounds great. Quote
colinmce Posted May 12, 2022 Report Posted May 12, 2022 I have an original, great album. Hopefully we will see an RE of the much, much rarer Abdul Wadud LP soon. Sirone did have one of those just perfect discographies. A few performances of note that haven't been mentioned here: -Life Rays w/ Walt Dickerson & Andrew Cyrille -High Two with Dave Burrell -many excellent dates with Charles Gayle, including the interesting and very underheard Silkheart quartet with Billy Bang & a young Tyshawn Sorey -Beneath Tones Floor with Oluyemi Thomas & Michael Wimberly Quote
