alocispepraluger102 Posted October 17, 2009 Report Posted October 17, 2009 i was recently very delighted to hear a circa 1960's savoy recording by barbara long. her voice was feathery, light, even delicate, with effortless swinging. some of her backing musicians were reasonably well-known at the time, al harewood being one. JSngry Posted October 17, 2009 Report Posted October 17, 2009 And Booker Ervin being another, on a few items. Not at all unpleasant, that one. And Booker Ervin being another, on a few items. Not at all unpleasant, that one. Quote
paul secor Posted October 17, 2009 Report Posted October 17, 2009 The same Barbara Long who wrote some liner notes, or just the same name? Quote
epistrophy007 Posted October 17, 2009 Report Posted October 17, 2009 I believe she is the same person Wasn't that for some Johnny Griffin album on Blue Note? She recorded also some songs with Herb Geller I believe... Anything known about her after the Savoy outing? j. Quote
AllenLowe Posted October 17, 2009 Report Posted October 17, 2009 she was married, briefly, to Bobby Short - Quote
alocispepraluger102 Posted October 17, 2009 Author Report Posted October 17, 2009 she was married, briefly, to Bobby Short - long and short? omg think of the album covers that could have been, or perhaps the pair could have been options traders. Quote
AllenLowe Posted October 17, 2009 Report Posted October 17, 2009 (edited) well, Bobby's second wife was Barbara Boxer - Edited October 17, 2009 by AllenLowe Quote
epistrophy007 Posted October 17, 2009 Report Posted October 17, 2009 Do you mean Bobby Short, the cabaret/jazzsinger-pianist? Wasn't he gay? j. Quote

epistrophy007 Posted October 17, 2009 Report Posted October 17, 2009 Short, shorter... Really?!? j. Quote
AllenLowe Posted October 17, 2009 Report Posted October 17, 2009 (edited) actually I was thinking: Barbara Boxer Short also, I made all of this up. as for his sexual orientation, I do recall that he had a long relationship with Gloria Vanderbilt (who was the mother of that dummy on CNN) - Edited October 17, 2009 by AllenLowe Quote
epistrophy007 Posted November 19, 2009 Report Posted November 19, 2009 Got it, and I love every minute of it... At first I had a few reservations against some tunes. Like for instance 'Swan Lake'. But it works. Her voice recalls the smoky Donna Brooks, the bluesy Debby Moore and a young Pinky Winters. Now I sure wanna have her collaboration with Herb Geller. j. Quote
brownie Posted November 20, 2009 Report Posted November 20, 2009 She recorded also some songs with Herb Geller I believe... That was on Geller's 'Gypsy' album on Atco. Music based on songs from the musical. Geller was helped by the Jones brothers (Thad, Hank and Elvin) plus Scott LaFaro on the tracks with Barbara Long. An old favorite (the album) of mine. Don't think it's been reissued on CD! Quote
epistrophy007 Posted November 20, 2009 Report Posted November 20, 2009 Spotted the album a few times on ebay (before I knew how good Long is) always as a very expensive Japanese reissue, maybe someday it will be available at a more reasonable price... j. Quote

Stumbled on to this album due to somebody posting it on YouTube as a cut from the Savoy record, kinda tripped me out, didn't recognize anything about it as Savoy, so got to researching, Found it, so I ordered it. It's on that Sonos Frescos label, or whatever it's called, that Spanish place that puts out all the jazz records that have already been put out, you know the one I mean. Georgie Poodles, that guy. Anyway, it's a pretty good listen, Elvin is totally unmistakable, some of the tunes are pianoless, which, June 9/10, 1959, are we mirroring Mulligan, hearing Ornette (this is Herb Geller, remember, he had already heard Ornette up close and personal, him and Lorraine), of did Hank get caught in traffic one day? And Barbara Long. On Atco?!?!?!?!?! Quote
