sjarrell Posted October 12, 2009 Report Posted October 12, 2009 The discs should be minty- I bought this set sealed and spun them all once, daintily. The book's unread. It's a promo, there's a small semi-circular mark on back from UPC drilling. $290 shipped in the US, I'll quote international, but it's between 5-6 lbs packed so: pricey. Quote
alppila Posted October 12, 2009 Report Posted October 12, 2009 Unreservedly recommended - and a fair price to boot. Quote
Ken Dryden Posted October 13, 2009 Report Posted October 13, 2009 I'd be surprised if it lasted long at that price, as used copies routinely sell for a lot more than $290. I don't think it remained in print for long. Quote
sjarrell Posted October 14, 2009 Author Report Posted October 14, 2009 If nobody's interested I reckon I'll list it on Amazon in a couple of days. Also: looks like postage to most of the EU is around $42, fwiw. Thanks for looking, everyone! Quote
Aggie87 Posted October 14, 2009 Report Posted October 14, 2009 I think TJazz's comment should be deleted, personally. Not cool in someone's FS thread, potentially discouraging buyers. Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted October 14, 2009 Report Posted October 14, 2009 I'm still trying to build up the courage to ask Ann if it's ok to buy this. Quote
sjarrell Posted October 14, 2009 Author Report Posted October 14, 2009 I can hold it for you if you'd like, Chuck. Quote
Adam Posted October 14, 2009 Report Posted October 14, 2009 How much of it has seen the come out independently of that box, in those or newer masterings? There was the 1940-42 (Blanton-Webster) 3 CD set, and the 1944-46 3 CD set. Much else? Quote
Ken Dryden Posted October 14, 2009 Report Posted October 14, 2009 I don't recall that much of it being reissued since 1999. The cardboard sleeves are a pain and the book tends to come apart if you try to read it much, but I would consider it essential for Ellington fans. I'm surprised that Chuck Nessa doesn't already own one of the 10,000 existing copies. Quote
Ken Dryden Posted October 14, 2009 Report Posted October 14, 2009 Well that was helpful. I thought that would be an incentive for someone to hurry up and buy it, so you didn't have to pay any fees to a website to sell it. But you are very generous to sell it for such a price, as many sellers are on this bulletin board. Quote

I should have quoted TJazz's post to make that clear. Thanks for trying to help, Ken! Quote
bluesbro Posted October 14, 2009 Report Posted October 14, 2009 I bought mine new for $350 and that was over 5 years ago. This is a bargain. Quote
Tom in RI Posted October 14, 2009 Report Posted October 14, 2009 I agree, this is an excellent price. I would buy if I didn't already have it. Quote
lipi Posted October 14, 2009 Report Posted October 14, 2009 So, why are you selling it? If it's so awesome, why did you only listen to it once? Just curious. Quote

ejp626 Posted October 14, 2009 Report Posted October 14, 2009 I agree, this is an excellent price. I would buy if I didn't already have it. Agreed. I managed to miss out on a used copy at a (long-gone) record store on Belmont (I think I was doing something daft like waiting until I had written a paper to reward myself). Fortunately, they still had a new copy at a fair price, and I thought about it for a day or two and bought that. This was around the time they were being phased out. A few months after this, I noticed the Borders on Michigan Ave. had one, but that was the last I've ever seen in a store. Quote
vajerzy Posted October 14, 2009 Report Posted October 14, 2009 Great set! And a great price! I haven't listened to everything in it- and I bought it when it was in print. I put the CDs in thin jewel cases and stored the box/cardboard cases/booklet in an attic. I wish I had the Mosaic Capitol and Reprise sets again to compliment this set. Quote
shaft Posted October 15, 2009 Report Posted October 15, 2009 Hi all Great set! And I was soooo lucky when I bought this for $80 in Sweden at Tradera.se (like swedish eBay) /Shaft Quote
