Bright Moments Posted November 24, 2003 Report Posted November 24, 2003 I am going to cleveland this wednesday through monday. does anyone have any recommendations as to where i should go to hear and buy jazz? thanks B) Quote
jazzbo Posted November 24, 2003 Report Posted November 24, 2003 In your shoes, shopping wise, I would look up the various Borders outlet stores in the area and check them out. . . when I've been able to visit them I've found all sorts of great cheap jazz cds. . . it has been several years though since I was last within the stores. bertrand Posted November 24, 2003 Report Posted November 24, 2003 I was there one week-end and went to the Bop Stop. It was a nice club, and I think it has moved to a bigger location. Bertrand. Quote
connoisseur series500 Posted November 24, 2003 Report Posted November 24, 2003 Check out the various Allied Record Exchanges for used cds. I live two hours from Cleveland and rarely go for jazz cds. There's a Record Exchange in Parma Hts, Elyria, Medina, North Olmsted, Cuyahoga Falls, Canton, Fairlawn, and Solon. I don't know my way around there, so don't ask... Quote
connoisseur series500 Posted November 24, 2003 Report Posted November 24, 2003 Better yet: drive 2 hours to see me here in Toledo and I'll take you to some places. Quote
Bright Moments Posted November 24, 2003 Author Report Posted November 24, 2003 thanks paul, but it will have to be another time. this trip with my wife & kids is for thanksgiving with relatives (hers) ----- so there is no escape!!!!!!! B) Quote
skeith Posted November 25, 2003 Report Posted November 25, 2003 Evan, If he's playing I would highly recommend seeing Ernie Krivda. He's a marvelous local tenor player who can really surprise you. the Boarding House in University Circle has some great local guys and Nighttown on Cedar Hill hass both local and national acts. Check it out. As for cds, Record Exchange used to be so good, but is dropping in selection over the years. Not sure there's a great place to buy jazz. Quote
Man with the Golden Arm Posted November 25, 2003 Report Posted November 25, 2003 oh, and the Boarding House had(?) the BEST chili in the western world. Used to be a place called Wax Stax on the East Side...great jazz selection over there but it's been so many years that when I was there the Browns were good and the Indians sucked. There was also an awesome little place in the Old Arcade where I bought my first CDs ever. Quote
Bright Moments Posted November 25, 2003 Author Report Posted November 25, 2003 Thanks Guys!!!!! Quote
skeith Posted November 25, 2003 Report Posted November 25, 2003 Man with Golden Arm and Evan, Sadly Wax Stax went out of business about 5 years ago and so did the place in the Old Arcade- that is a beautiful place to visit but the store is gone. Oh Evan, not jazz related but if you get a chance treat yourself to a visit to Great Lakes Brewery near the West Side Market. This place has some of the best beers I have had on any continent. Quote
Christiern Posted November 25, 2003 Report Posted November 25, 2003 I thought Cleveland was strictly a one-way trip. Have I been misinformed? Quote

Not sure there's a great place to buy jazz. Come on! There's gotta be some place in Cleveland to buy jazz cds. I would like to know myself as I'm only two hours away. I mean, a city of that size; surely there's more than just rock and roll...? Quote

Bright Moments Posted December 1, 2003 Author Report Posted December 1, 2003 Well, i'm back from cleveland. Checked both alternative newspapers--a jazz desert. nuthin. Went to the Exchange in Parma Heights and found Lee Morgan's Sixth Sense" for $7.00 Went to the cd exchange in cleveland and found Greg Osby's first for $2.99 Oh, and it snowed Friday night! All in all, a good time was had by all. Quote
skeith Posted December 2, 2003 Report Posted December 2, 2003 Evan, If you are looking for the big jazz names of international fame, well yes, they rarely pass through Cleveland, but there should have been some local guys playing that are quite good. Don't tell me the Boarding House or Nighttown, which feature live jazz 5 nights a week have closed? these clubs are on the east side and maybe you didn't go there. Quote
Bright Moments Posted December 2, 2003 Author Report Posted December 2, 2003 nope, didn't get there. oh well, there's always the next visit! Quote
wesbed Posted December 2, 2003 Report Posted December 2, 2003 Well, i'm back from cleveland. Checked both alternative newspapers--a jazz desert. nuthin. Methinks there is not much jazz activity in Columbus either. Quote
