jostber Posted October 7, 2009 Report Posted October 7, 2009 Just noticed this new reissue. How is this album? http://www.dustygroove.com/item.php?id=64n...p;ref=index.php Quote
felser Posted October 7, 2009 Report Posted October 7, 2009 It's just fine! Typical Blue Note session of the period (mid-late 50's), no more, no less. What's not to like? To me, Jordan didn't really find his voice until his time with Mingus in the 60's. Quote
Dan Gould Posted October 7, 2009 Report Posted October 7, 2009 Back when I was still Mogie Man, this is one I was on the lookout for and I recall being somewhat disappointed overall. I'd have to say its a below-average BN of the period. YMMV. Quote
Peter Friedman Posted October 7, 2009 Report Posted October 7, 2009 This one grew on me. The first time I heard it I considered it just ok. After some time passed I went back and listened to it again a few times and began to like it very much. Ray Bryant's piano playing adds a lot to the session. Quote
Clunky Posted October 7, 2009 Report Posted October 7, 2009 Well I've always loved this session, better than Morgan's dates from a similar time. Quote
colinmce Posted October 7, 2009 Report Posted October 7, 2009 Can anyone explain why several BN titles that aren't on CD are readily available on these LP re-issues? Quote
sjarrell Posted October 8, 2009 Report Posted October 8, 2009 Can anyone explain why several BN titles that aren't on CD are readily available on these LP re-issues? Is it a Scorpio? Because I know they have a contract to produce x-number gf BN titles of their choice. Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted October 8, 2009 Report Posted October 8, 2009 Can anyone explain why several BN titles that aren't on CD are readily available on these LP re-issues? From a marketing standpoint, that's the way to go. Quote
colinmce Posted October 8, 2009 Report Posted October 8, 2009 True enough. I'm not complaining! Quote
king ubu Posted October 8, 2009 Report Posted October 8, 2009 So this is actually a Blue Note vinyl reissue? Not some silly audiophile 450g vinyl crap stuff or an Italian rip-off? Might then be an option to finally "legally" own this one! I think it's "just fine" as well... Quote
sidewinder Posted October 8, 2009 Report Posted October 8, 2009 One of my favourite Lee Morgan/Clifford Jordan sessions: Quote
Peter Friedman Posted October 8, 2009 Report Posted October 8, 2009 Can anyone explain why several BN titles that aren't on CD are readily available on these LP re-issues? This Clifford Jordan date was issued on CD in Japan. I have a copy. Don't know if it currently available. Quote
BruceH Posted October 8, 2009 Report Posted October 8, 2009 I'd have to say it struck me as a trifle below-average when I first heard it, especially considering the lineup. But with repeated listenings it began to grow on me somewhat. But MOST things start to grow on you after a while.... Quote
AndrewHill Posted October 8, 2009 Report Posted October 8, 2009 (edited) Another date with Jordan and Morgan that I really enjoy is "Baltimore '68" on Fresh Sound, but it seems to be OOP and its going for an absurd $155 at the Amazon marketplace. If you can find a copy at a sane price I'd say get it. It has Ed Blackwell on it too. Edited October 8, 2009 by Holy Ghost Quote

fasstrack Posted October 8, 2009 Report Posted October 8, 2009 One of my favourite Lee Morgan/Clifford Jordan sessions: Yes. Very nice. A lot of stretching out by everyone. I forget the tunes. Quote
colinmce Posted October 9, 2009 Report Posted October 9, 2009 Another question, then. Anyone know who presses LP reissues of those early 80s unreleased BN sessions (the ones with the plain white cover and random image)? Scorpio? I have seen copies of titles like Vertigo, Africaine and Mothership stocked (& re-stocked) at a local shop. I'd like to know what other titles are available. Quote
sjarrell Posted October 9, 2009 Report Posted October 9, 2009 Scorpio does full original artwork. Quote
Free For All Posted October 9, 2009 Report Posted October 9, 2009 I really like this cover- it was designed by Tom Hannan. Did he do other BN covers? I discovered I didn't have this and ordered it from DG. It showed up today along with another one I didn't have: (note the mispelling of Frank Rehak's name, and hardly a complementary variation at that) Quote
B. Clugston Posted October 9, 2009 Report Posted October 9, 2009 One of my favourite Lee Morgan/Clifford Jordan sessions: Yes. Very nice. A lot of stretching out by everyone. I forget the tunes. Includes a nice version of "Straight, No Chaser" and a cover of a Mobley tune called here "The Vamp" but actually something else. I forget the others. Quote

Free For All Posted October 10, 2009 Report Posted October 10, 2009 Nice! Those are all great covers. Thanks Chas! Quote
