jazzbo Posted October 11, 2009 Author Report Posted October 11, 2009 (edited) Sounds mighty fine to me, too! There's lots of great Jimi amidst the Douglas produced material. Some of this has been officially released since then without his "substitutions," etc. More will follow I'm sure. IN MY OPINION you can't go wrong, material wise, with any of the official releases. And I like them sonically; they at least mirror the LP mixes, and to my ears and on my system they sound great. Edited October 11, 2009 by jazzbo Quote
king ubu Posted October 12, 2009 Report Posted October 12, 2009 Norm said: Hmmm...this is interesting. I've come to Jimi only lately. In fact, I picked up my first set of his this week. This stuff sounds great to me. I don't have any of the Experience Hendrix studio albums issued in 1997, but I've heard elsewhere that they are pretty decent. Oh, I'm sure there are Japanese releases costing an arm and a leg that sound better...but isn't that always the case. The stuff I've heard that one should avoid like the plague is the stuff supervised by Alan Douglas who brought in studio musicians to "help" finish studio recordings and Reprise releasing everything under the sun that is unfinished and bastardized, and then MCA trying to fix all the screw-ups of MCA and Douglas. For alternative takes and live cuts, though, I'm really enjoying the 4-CD box set pictured above. Anybody else have this one? Dissatisfied with it? If so, what should I be looking into? (as it sounds mighty fine to me). nothing wrong with this, one, i think... great box indeed! those early live tracks are terrific! Quote
Quincy Posted June 23, 2010 Report Posted June 23, 2010 If you aren't allergic to 320 kbps mp3s, some of the Dagger releases are $9.99 as downloads. Quote

mjzee Posted June 24, 2010 Report Posted June 24, 2010 My favorite Hendrix are the first album, Band of Gypsies, and Woodstock. Also 2 obscure singles: Stepping Stone (not the version that appeared on War Heroes) and The Stars That Play With Laughing Sam's Dice. Quote
BFrank Posted June 24, 2010 Report Posted June 24, 2010 I highly recommend "The Baggy’s Rehearsal Sessions". It's a set of loose jamming from the rehearsals for the New Years' Band of Gypsys shows. They're having a great time and it shows in the music. A few of the tunes were previously released on the "Loose Ends" collection. Quote
bertrand Posted June 24, 2010 Report Posted June 24, 2010 Is the track with Larry Young which was originally released on Nine To The Universe available on CD or as a download? Thanks, Bertrand. Quote
