7/4 Posted October 6, 2009 Report Posted October 6, 2009 I think someone invited him over here because they thought it would be a good place to troll. Agree. He hints at it on his member page: I was not invited. I was brought here by my date.
Jazzmoose Posted October 6, 2009 Report Posted October 6, 2009 I think someone invited him over here because they thought it would be a good place to troll. And they were right; there was no shortage of eager fish to take the bait...
Chuck Nessa Posted October 6, 2009 Report Posted October 6, 2009 Can't we stop this thread and forget about the bad times? Please.
J.A.W. Posted October 6, 2009 Report Posted October 6, 2009 Can't we stop this thread and forget about the bad times? Please. I second that suggestion.
connoisseur series500 Posted October 6, 2009 Report Posted October 6, 2009 I'm not here to comment on Bixie. I just think it sucks to be stuck here with Agg and Free!
GregK Posted October 6, 2009 Report Posted October 6, 2009 I must say I am always a bit suspect about people who come on here and post mainly in the politics form, there must be loads of purely political fourms on the WWW, why go to a Jazz board to do so, Bixieland never really posted in the music threads and when did it was usually asking fairly ill informed questions.IMHO. Then you should be suspicious of Johnny E, too.
Aggie87 Posted October 6, 2009 Report Posted October 6, 2009 I'm not here to comment on Bixie. I just think it sucks to be stuck here with Agg and Free! To paraphrase Sir Mick - you can't always get what you want - but sometimes you get what you need.

Then you should be suspicious of Johnny E, too. Wrong. Johnny has a long history going back to the old BNBB, where he used to post a lot more about music. He's also a jazz musician, putting it out there and trying to make a living and rightfully trying to promote his own band. He and Bixie are completely incomparable.
AllenLowe Posted October 6, 2009 Report Posted October 6, 2009 well, Johnny's incomparable - Bixie is more...irreparable -
Harold_Z Posted October 6, 2009 Report Posted October 6, 2009 Nobody should have responded to bixieland - he'd have split without any need to ban him. It was obvious that he was impervious to any logic. Besides that - he sullied the name of a good Eddie Condon album. That REALLY pissed me off.
sonnymax Posted October 7, 2009 Report Posted October 7, 2009 I make the assumption that everyone is here in good faith. His tactics were disingenuous, dishonest, and disrespectful of the intelligence of the community and I got tired of putting up with it. thank you.
BruceH Posted October 7, 2009 Report Posted October 7, 2009 Bixieland has been banned? Good news. And about time. The guy was a complete troll.
Use3D Posted October 7, 2009 Report Posted October 7, 2009 Can't we stop this thread and forget about the bad times? Please. For the record I'd normally close 'Why is such-and-such this?' threads instantly.
Noj Posted October 7, 2009 Report Posted October 7, 2009 Let's have a contest. What would you have changed the text under Bixie's avatar to? I'm going to go with "Has Mancrush On Kenny Gorelick."
Christiern Posted October 7, 2009 Report Posted October 7, 2009 Can't we stop this thread and forget about the bad times? Please. For the record I'd normally close 'Why is such-and-such this?' threads instantly. I bet you would. You did the right thing, Jim. I just wonder what took you so long

Son-of-a-Weizen Posted October 7, 2009 Report Posted October 7, 2009 (edited) I must say I am always a bit suspect about people who come on here and post mainly in the politics form, there must be loads of purely political fourms on the WWW, why go to a Jazz board to do so, Bixieland never really posted in the music threads and when did it was usually asking fairly ill informed questions.IMHO. Then you should be suspicious of Johnny E, too. Cliff, that "ill-informed" line really does come off as haughty/snobby. ....and since we're talking "ill-informed," it might be worth the effort to actually do a wee bit of basic research before commenting on someone's posting style. A basic search of his posting history from April, 2007 forward clearly shows that -- with 2 lone exceptions -- his first 70 posts were in the music forums -- and it was only in February of this year that he seems to have put down roots in the pol forum. Greg, My guess is that had this same poster arrived in 2006, and basically proceeded to play the exact same game -- though with Bush being the object of his dart throwing & wisecracks -- he'd be somewhat of a popular character down in the political forum weedbed. Characters abound ..and periodically bounce off the walls...Lowe, Clementine........but somehow, this one guy was simply too much to stomach, huh? Oh, well. Hey, at least Jim was honest about it -- he got sick of it. Not that the guy was cursing people out.....not that he was threatening to punch 'em in the eye...or stalk them -- like the one poster here who suggested that someone contact Bixie's boss at work to tell 'em that he might be posting from his place of business. Woa. Hey, speaking of stalking -- don't look now but Chris A is back to haunt Use3D!! Chris, how goes it? Vic Christianson's been looking for you. Edited October 7, 2009 by Son-of-a-Weizen
jostber Posted October 7, 2009 Report Posted October 7, 2009 What's the best Dixieland band ever? (Not to digress, but it just seemed appropriate). My suggestion: http://www.worldsrecords.com/pages/artists...nier_64571.html That first song is about..who?
AllenLowe Posted October 7, 2009 Report Posted October 7, 2009 "Characters abound ..and periodically bounce off the walls...Lowe, Clementine....." I rather picture myself as Organissimo's version of Superman, appearing only as needed to ward off evil.
JSngry Posted October 7, 2009 Report Posted October 7, 2009 Greg, My guess is that had this same poster arrived in 2006, and basically proceeded to play the exact same game -- though with Bush being the object of his dart throwing & wisecracks -- he'd be somewhat of a popular character down in the political forum weedbed. Characters abound ..and periodically bounce off the walls...Lowe, Clementine........but somehow, this one guy was simply too much to stomach, huh? Oh, well. A point well-taken indeed, but...the uber-lefties will occasionally get called down/out by the more centrist ones. I don't recall a similar thing happening with our departed guest, except for maybe one or two things of yours towards the end. Maybe there would have been more to come. I'd like to think so. What totally bugged me was his adressing everybody not on his page as "leftists", "socialists", "statists", whatever and then attributing all sorts of absolutist "motivations" to any disagreements with his rather absolutist "libertarian" attitudes. There was no room for nuance with the guy, no room for partian agreement or disagreement, and no looking at anybody as an individual rather than a "type". It was a like dealing with a Wynton fanatic... It was also the introduction of an idealogue rather than an idea, and the further it went on, the further it became obvious that this guy(?) was here, not to debate or introduce ideas, persopectives, and concepts, but just to put a label on everybody who would disagree with him and then use that label as a springboard from which to proclaim his idological superiority. We've had leftist trolls take this approach from time to time, and they've been banned too. The guy never allowed that he was dealing with nuanced individuals here. Whethre that was becuase he was teminally myopic or just a "posture" on his part, it grew old quickly, and never produced anything other than YES! NO! YES! NO! YES! NO! ad infinitum. His banning is no loss at all to intellegent, or even semi-intellegent, dialogue.
Son-of-a-Weizen Posted October 7, 2009 Report Posted October 7, 2009 I rather picture myself as Organissimo's version of Superman, appearing only as needed to ward off evil. Evil, huh? I was think something more along the lines of Kryptonite Man 'cause you did such a swell job of warding off that Karl Berger guy.

fasstrack Posted October 7, 2009 Report Posted October 7, 2009 I didn't read most of his stuff, and mostly avoid topical discussions---but I will say this (not knowing the details of what happened, admittedly): it's not a good idea to ban people from web rooms unless they are menacing someone online (or stalking them privately). When one particular moron was constantly stalking me on a chat room I used to participate in the 'leader' (it was Branford Marsalis) made a comment that 'free speech is not selective'. He told me to ignore the guy. He was right. (In the end, the trolls and assholes took over Bran's site and he closed it down and that was a drag). There is an 'ignore' feature that is very handy here. I suggest people use it. And if you get into rants over politics know going in it could get ugly and act like adults. And don't take it that damn seriously. As you were.......(;

As a result, as you said, "trolls and assholes" end up taking over unless the iron fist is applied. Thankfully, Jim/Use3D rarely use that function, which is a testament to their overall commitment to responsible free-speech and their infinite patience with the humanity that gets displayed in the political forums.
