riverrat Posted November 24, 2003 Report Posted November 24, 2003 I'd like to hear from board members about the the session itself, and also on the quality of the Fresh Sounds reissue. Thanks in advance. Quote
pryan Posted November 24, 2003 Report Posted November 24, 2003 I'm just waiting for the wise ass to say this album is "out of this world". Whoops, I already did. Seriously, though, someone else will have to help you out on this one, because I haven't heard it. Quote
Chrome Posted November 24, 2003 Report Posted November 24, 2003 I don't know that specific session, but I've got Byrd in Hand and Byrd Live at the Half Note, both w/Adams, and the two really work well together on this music. Quote
Peter A Posted November 24, 2003 Report Posted November 24, 2003 Great session, particularly the title track. I think it is as good as the various Byrd-Adams sessions issued on Blue Note. Things couldn't have gone wrong with such a line up: Byrd, Adams, Herbie Hancock, Laymon Jackson and Jimmy Cobb. I only have the original record on Warwick Records - which is a pretty noisy pressing - so I can't comment on the sonic of the Fresh Sound reissue. Quote
JSngry Posted November 24, 2003 Report Posted November 24, 2003 I know this material from the TCB "reissue" of the 1970s, and it ain't too shabby. Quote
mikeweil Posted November 24, 2003 Report Posted November 24, 2003 The Fresh Sound is okay, sound wise, and the LP pressing was good. They did two LPs, one a straight reissue of the Warwick, Vol. 2 with alternates, many of them incomplete takes but with very good solo work. Quote
riverrat Posted November 25, 2003 Author Report Posted November 25, 2003 Thanks for the comments folks! I will probably go ahead and pick up the Fresh Sounds CD of this session. Quote
robviti Posted November 26, 2003 Report Posted November 26, 2003 yes, do! this is a wonderful session, and the fresh sounds reissue is by far the best way to hear this music on cd. Quote
Mark Stryker Posted August 26, 2013 Report Posted August 26, 2013 These sessions in their various incarnations have been discussed a few times here, but I'm trying to get clarity on something: While these represent Herbie Hancock's first recordings, my understanding is that they were not released at the time and Byrd's "Royal Flush," recording in Sept. 1961 and presumably released around the end of that year, was the first time anyone had heard Herbie in record. Is this correct? Quote
JohnS Posted August 26, 2013 Report Posted August 26, 2013 I have the TCB vinyl. It never struck a chord with me so clearly due for a reappraisal. Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted August 26, 2013 Report Posted August 26, 2013 Checking my Down Beat review annuals I see Out of this World was reviewed in 1961 and Royal Flush in 1963. Quote
Mark Stryker Posted August 26, 2013 Report Posted August 26, 2013 Checking my Down Beat review annuals I see Out of this World was reviewed in 1961 and Royal Flush in 1963. Hmm. Interesting, thanks. Does it say which issue in '61? I've got most of them at home. How could it be that Byrd would have a record come out on Warwick right in the middle of what I assume would be an exclusive contract with Blue Note -- unless the early '61 recording was literally after one BN deal had ended and another had started? Larry Kart Posted August 26, 2013 Report Posted August 26, 2013 Heard that group live at the Birdhouse in Chicago in '61. Quote

My Google shows me that on the original album, Pepper Adams had top billing, for whatever that's worth. Quote
mjzee Posted August 27, 2013 Report Posted August 27, 2013 What's the best way to get this music now - still the Fresh Sound CD? It doesn't have the alternates. Quote

bertrand Posted August 27, 2013 Report Posted August 27, 2013 The Fresh Sound CD has a problem, IIRC. I think the song 'Curro's' is repeated so instead of 12 minutes, it's the 6 minute track played over. I'll have to check. Bertrand. Quote

I must say that I'd never have noticed. I thought it was just twice round the block for that tune. If it's true then the solos on the second part of the tune are different from those in the first part. Not the most interesting tune on the CD, IMO. Edited August 27, 2013 by Head Man Quote
Rooster_Ties Posted August 27, 2013 Report Posted August 27, 2013 Anybody have a good source for good, complete discographical info for this date? In particular, accurate composer credits? Any Herbie-penned tunes? Thanks in advance! Quote
JSngry Posted August 27, 2013 Report Posted August 27, 2013 You mean "Herb", correct? It's Herb Hancock that's on this record. Quote

EKE BBB Posted August 28, 2013 Report Posted August 28, 2013 More accurate recording date is January 1961, according to Pepper Adams biographer and discographer Gary Carner ( http://www.pepperadams.com/DatesAsLeader.html ). Quote
Peter Friedman Posted August 28, 2013 Report Posted August 28, 2013 My copy is a Japanese CD. Label on the front cover and CD says Warwick with Century Record Co. Ltd. Japan also mentioned. The front cover has the original art work from the Warwick LP. Quote
