ralphie_boy Posted November 23, 2003 Report Posted November 23, 2003 I finally picked up a copy of this after holding off for quite awhile. As I imagined, this is definitely a departure from his previous work. Part R&B (sounding alot like King Curtis to me at times), part gospel, part do-wop, part God knows what else; but all in all, not a bad session. Wondering what others think about this one? Quote
jazzbo Posted November 23, 2003 Report Posted November 23, 2003 I like this one, better than most of Music is a Healing Force of the Universe really. I liked this direction he was moving in . . . it seemed a natural extension of his work, a logical move from Love Cry. I hope that this gets reissued in the US soon. . . I have a great Japanese k2 copy, but I'd like to see this in the stores, available. I haven't yet ever heard The Last Album, and want to. Ayler was a fascinating man and musician to me; I would love to see learn more about his life and work. Quote
JohnS Posted November 23, 2003 Report Posted November 23, 2003 I'll own up to liking it too. It always brings a smile to my face. Quote
Simon Weil Posted November 23, 2003 Report Posted November 23, 2003 I like it too, though I'm hard pressed to see why. It's kind of patchy, but it has a nice vibe. "Quite good", I guess, is how I see it. There's lots of little things that add up - the solo and little arrangement on track 1, the cod-calypso of New Ghosts, the authentic r&b... I agree with Lon that it seems a development of Love Cry. Simon Weil Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted November 23, 2003 Report Posted November 23, 2003 Geez! Mosaic was raked over the coals for reversing Roy Eldridge and nobody mentions Impulse printing Albert upsidedown. Quote
Simon Weil Posted November 23, 2003 Report Posted November 23, 2003 (edited) I always assumed they were trying to tell you Albert's beard was the New Grass...Or something. It did seem like a jolly weird cover. A cynical view might be that someone was saying that Albert had it all upside down...Or maybe the world was upside down. Or maybe the designer was from Australia... Simon Weil Edited November 23, 2003 by Simon Weil Quote
Bright Moments Posted September 20, 2005 Report Posted September 20, 2005 (edited) gave new grass a spin and enjoyed it. certainly a "different" ayler but it seems to me to be part of a natural progression to what was "in" in 1968. and how can you resist a song that chants "sock it to him, sock it to him" !! and as a bonus, my wife liked it too! JSngry Posted September 21, 2005 Report Posted September 21, 2005 Am I hearing wrong, or is Albert occasionally on alto here? Quote
