Walt Richmond Posted September 18, 2009 Report Posted September 18, 2009 (edited) Does anyone have any advice for the best collections of Miles Davis' work in the '50s? I see individual albums available, but is there a good box set that contains all the titles like Relaxin' and the other early quintet albums? Edited September 18, 2009 by Walt Richmond Quote

jazzbo Posted September 18, 2009 Report Posted September 18, 2009 Well, let's not overlook. . . . The Complete Columbia Recordings of Miles Davis and John Coltrane. . . . Quote

colinmce Posted September 18, 2009 Report Posted September 18, 2009 All good options. FYI, though, there's also a ghastly looking tin-box Miles set sold at Wal-Mart for 16.88 which contains Relaxin', Workin' and Cookin' in original packaging. It's a steal. Quote
CJ Shearn Posted September 18, 2009 Report Posted September 18, 2009 the legit releases? or one of their bootlegs? Quote
Walt Richmond Posted September 19, 2009 Author Report Posted September 19, 2009 Or you could just...get the individual albums. Worked for me... That's generally what I do. I guess I didn't phrase my question as well as I could have. I just want to be sure to get the best quality recordings. Actually, I enjoy collecting individual albums, but I don't know a lot about "remastered" versions. I just know I've bought a couple remastered CDs that were great, and a couple that weren't done that well. If I'm going to flesh out my Miles collection, I'd like to get the best quality recordings. the legit releases? or one of their bootlegs? Everything that's available. I really love that era of his music. Quote

You really can't go wrong with masterings and sound quality when it comes to the OJC's and the Columbia/Legacys. These are for the most part, consistently well-remastered. The Prestige RVG's have been a real treat too. Quote
JSngry Posted September 19, 2009 Report Posted September 19, 2009 With a turntable and a little luck, you can get some pretty nice-sounding OJC vinyls and some really nice sounding Columbias. But they're not necessarily any better than some good digital remastering, and are definitely more trouble when, with even a little more luck, you're making out (and beyond). So stick with CDs. Quote
Walt Richmond Posted September 19, 2009 Author Report Posted September 19, 2009 (edited) Yeah, I've been toying with the idea of getting a turntable for really special albums, but CDs seem like a good compromise between sound quality and durability. Thanks for all the advice, everyone! Edited September 19, 2009 by Walt Richmond Quote

CJ Shearn Posted September 21, 2009 Report Posted September 21, 2009 this Miles tin box at FYE and Wallyworld with Cookin/Relaxin/Workin I have no need for it as I have the Prestige Quintet box. Is this box packed with the RVG's or OJC versions? Quote
