Got my Stitt box today too. Started to play disc 1 and found that my 15 year old cd player isn't working. Now I'm doing some searches here for cd/sacd players. I'll try to change my attitude but it sure has been nice not having to research, audition, compare equipment, etc. Hopefully audio has improved since I last purchased and I can decide quickly.

The library will deface it many ways ....

Not to derail, but this is the truth. I was ecstatic when the Arlington Public Library system got MULTIPLE copies of the Miles Davis ON THE CORNER box that I didn't care what they did to the boxes! So yeah, don't cancel that order. Heck, I oughta order a few copies and donate them to the Arlington Library!

Today is August 8th and I finally got the remaining 6 titles from my July 5th order. "Stitt's Bits" was one of the 6. It's a real shame that they had to deface that nice/thick cardboard sleeve on the Stitt box with that humungous spine cut. I wish they blacked out the bar code instead.

I (tried to?) cancel my order because of this. First, I really don't want to give an abused item as a gift - even to a library - and second, NO MORE VIOLENCE even against jewel cases.

Don't be silly - you wanted to give a $5 item to a library and the cut would shame you? The library will deface it many ways and you would deprive the library of a nice bunch of music.

I had most of the music in the Stitt box and never pulled the $30 trigger. For $5 I can live with the mark.

If they insist on sending you the "abused" set, send it to me, I'll give you a dollar bonus and give it to my library.

Actually, the question is not about whether to donate to the library, but WHAT to donate. My intention is to donate a good condition, non-abused Stitt's Bits. I'm something of a believer in the 'broken windows' theory. To place abused items in a library - wherever the abuse came from - only encourages (or "permits"?) abuse of other library materials.

I've recently seen copies of SB at (blanking out on the name - independent shop in Denver, big, just down from Second Spin) and Record City in Las Vegas for around $10. Buy from a local shop, support the busines and still "do right" by the library.

I'd originally gone for the Oldies deal because I'd never received "abused" merchandise from them before.

I think what Chuck is getting at is it's very likely the library will repackage Stitt's Bits so the hole in the cardboard side won't even matter. I've checked out discs from the library that were originally issued as digi-packs or heavy stock cardboard sets that the library repackaged into jewel cases for circulation. The library used a combination of the copy machine and scissors to provide artwork or notes. Because of the use of scissors needless to say the notes are often incomplete (such as our library's copy of the 1st Chuck Berry Hip-O set.) There's also a chance that a library might allow each disc to be checked out individually. That's how mine handles Mosaic Selects.

Ah, I see his perspective. The library I like to support recently re-opened after a long remodel/earthquake upgrade. In the past, it's been a pretty unsophisticated affair - no RFID readers or devices to detect books and other materials being removed from the premises. So CDs and VHS movies (no DVDs) remain in their original packaging, with an item number attached with scotch tape. Now, that may have changed. Thanks for the thoughts.

Just a quick 'further thought' to give a little perspective on the CD collection at this library; not that long ago, I donated a bunch of CD jewel boxes/cases to replace the many that had cracked. None of those "long box" theft-resistant, hard plastic encasings at this library.

Well after I don't know how many phone calls and different stories from Oldies customer reps, my credit card has FINALLY been billed for the Stitt set. Been over a month since I first ordered it, so it's about time.

Now if it actually shows up that will be even better.

That DOES kinda make the whole credit-card-billing thing go down a bit better.

I ordered around 40 on July 4 and another 16 on the 28th.

I never called anyone and received all but 4 from the first order - these 4 have been removed from the sale.

I have received all but 3 from the second order but have hope for more charges to my account.

I am more than happy with what I have received.

My card has now been billed for 3 more.

Try and figure this one out, because I can't: as payment for a recent CD sale to another board member, he bought me a gift certificate to Oldies.com. I used the entire certificate plus four bucks & some change, which was billed to my CC. Two days afterwards, I received a notification that my order had shipped. There was no indication that anything did NOT ship or was backordered; however, my CC had not been charged that four bucks, either.

This was last Monday (August 3). I still haven't received the order but noticed this strange thing: my credit card had been credited SIX bucks and some change by Oldies.com!

Will keep y'all posted, but that's the strangest thing I've seen in a while....

The UPS tracking info says my package weighs 4.6 pounds. Seems a bit light for 20 CDs.

Check the credit card charge and start dividing.

That's the thing, it was one lump charge that equaled the total order less $4.98.

Oh well, though, we'll see.

I got everything I ordered except the two Peter Leitch discs. These were the two I wanted to hear the most, and I'm not holding my breath that these will get filled in 30 days, but hey: 16 out of 18? I'll take that!

Another board member who lives outside the US had a whole boatload shipped to me: out of 65 CDs ordered, 61 shipped! My office looks like a used-CD store right now! :D
