Available September 14, 2009. (Amazon shows October)

Containing the best, and some of the rarest LP covers produced over the long history of the Prestige label, this deluxe coffee table book also features an insightful introduction by famed jazz documentarian Ira Gitler who wrote liner notes for many of Prestige's earliest and best known records. In addition, the book contains an exclusive bonus CD featuring music culled from several classic Prestige albums.

It COULD be nice ...

but ...

I wonder how much duplication there is with earlier album cover books that cover the ground pretty nicely, such as "East Coasting". Even if they did not focus exclusively on Prestige they did include a fair share of "typical" Prestige artwork. So if this new one stops by the typical Miles and nother major artists' covers once more (just because they "are the one to be seen because they are the 'Classics' ") then I wonder ...

And I'd also be interested in finding out beforehand to what extent they include the 10in album covers. After all THESE are an aspect that is sadly neglected and in order to fill a few gaps a FULL run of the 10in covers would not be out of place. But could marketing guys be expected to cover something for the sake of historical reasons if these are NOT the album covers that are used for their present-day CD reissues? ;)

Or to put it another way, the subject of the book has a lot of merits but I became a bit wary when I saw it was produced by Concord themselves.

But anyway ... to each his own ... and in a pinch I can always go back to that Japanese-published Prestige discography book that came out in the 90s (don't have its exact title on hand right now) that includes pics of each and every cover, even if thumbnail-sized only and only part of them in full color.

Generally I always thought the Prestige covers not as attractive as the Riverside and Blue Note covers. Mind you, I'm talking generally...

And I would like to see those 10"ers.

I like the very early original 10" LPs. those things are like from another world, or like a baseball card.

Agreed. I have been tempted to buy the Japanese repress ones from True Blue, but they're just too much.

I am working on picking up all of the OJC 10" collation CDs, though.

Gokudo has only three Prestige ten-inch covers , Birkajazz , two dozen or so of the roughly two-hundred issued , meaning the majority remain largely unseen . I don't imagine the forthcoming Prestige book will remedy this , as it's likely to be more marketing tool than reference work . In view of which , I should note that I've an assemblage of Prestige ten-inch cover pics not on Gokudo or Birkajazz that I could post if there's interest .

Could not find the Prestige Records Album Cover book listed on Amazon-at least under that name/ Subject

Curious about what they are charging for the Book/ CD?

Anyone have the link?

thanks!

Gokudo has only three Prestige ten-inch covers

The links (see "next" at the top and bottom of some of his pages) are sometimes tricky to navigate, but here's a page with far more than 3: http://gokudo.co.jp/Record/10inRec2/index.htm

I should note that I've an assemblage of Prestige ten-inch cover pics not on Gokudo or Birkajazz that I could post if there's interest.

Add me to the list of interested parties! :tup:cool:

i have that. and all the images are thumbnail sized. so it's not bad having them at full page size. i looked into that eastcoasting, which i think also covered atlantic and everything non west coast, and it was not bad but it's better having prestige alone. i think they've been a bit neglected. there's been to much exposition to the blue note stuff.

but i mirror your thoughts. it could be good but... but i think i'll order it!

Yes , some of the very earliest Prestige 10-inchers are , viewed with modern eyes , quaint . The ones sporting plain brown back covers and text-heavy front covers approach a military-like genericness , though on occasion the amateurish minimalism achieves a kind of charming simplicity :

Chas, did you notice my post above? The Mulligan, as well as that Ammons All Stars, are both included on the Gokudo page I linked.

Gee , tough room .

I never said I would post only covers not found on Gokudo or Birkajazz , but that I would post some covers not found there , which is what I have done . I assume all the Prestige 10" covers are viewable somewhere , though if anyone knows where I can view the cover to PRLP-163 , please let me know .

Anyhow , here are a couple more covers , this time featuring the Van Gelder's (shower) curtains :

Chas, why are you getting so defensive?

I corrected you above regarding your comment about how many Prestige 10" covers there are at Gokudo (and I really think it's tricky to navigate there). You didn't respond, nor did you mention the link I posted. Then you posted some covers that were on the page I linked. I only wondered whether you had noticed my post and had seen the numerous Prestige covers at Gokudo. My intention was to make sure you would see the page and enjoy it. Does that make sense? Sheesh.

Thanks for posting the images, btw.
