Dave James Posted August 28, 2009 Report Posted August 28, 2009 I have nothing against Christmas, but the fact that Bob Dylan, that's Bob as in Dylan, will be releasing an album of Christmas music somehow seems wrong. If you could go back in time and tell the Highway 61 era Dylan that in 2009 he's be recording a Christmas themed album, I wonder how he would have reacted? I know the times they are a changin', but this isn't working for me. Should I feel shame? Up over and out. Quote
RDK Posted August 28, 2009 Report Posted August 28, 2009 I think it's a cool idea. The only thing I'd like better is a Tom Waits Christmas album! Ever hear "Dylan Does Dr. Seuss?" (You might still be able to find it on the net.) Quote
Dan Gould Posted August 28, 2009 Report Posted August 28, 2009 It sounds atrocious and I am guessing that only die-hard Dylan fans would want to set a Christmas mood while listening to him allegedly "sing" holiday tunes. I think I'd rather hear Billy Idol's Christmas record of a couple years ago. Quote

I'm looking forward to this because I have yet to hear one Christmas cd that doesn't cause me to puke. I'm hoping this one is a good one. Quote
Dan Gould Posted August 28, 2009 Report Posted August 28, 2009 I aim to please. If every other Christmas CD makes you puke, than I imagine the ultimate anti-Christmas CD will be the exception to the rule. Hope it works out for ya. Quote
Aggie87 Posted August 28, 2009 Report Posted August 28, 2009 Isn't Bob Jewish? Or did he officially convert to Christianity? Interesting when people who wouldn't normally celebrate Christmas release Christmas albums, like Kenny G. Not that I care either way, Christmas albums seem to reek more of money grabs than artistic statements. Quote

In the 1970's, Dylan was a "Born Again" Christian, as to his religion now, he rarely speaks of it. Though, the last time I saw his Bobness in person at Key Arena in Seattle (three years ago?), his Christianity was explicitly mentioned in the stage introduction. Quote
RDK Posted August 28, 2009 Report Posted August 28, 2009 Since when does X-mas music have anything to do with Christianity? Quote
blind-blake Posted August 28, 2009 Report Posted August 28, 2009 I'm not sure if you were aware of it but the following Christmas songs were written by Jews: White Christmas - Irving Berlin Christmas Song - Mel Torme Let it Snow! Let it Snow! Let it Snow! - Kahn/Styne Rudolph The Red Nosed Reindeer, Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree, Holly Jolly Christmas -- all by Johnny Marks, who was Jewish It's The Most Wonderful Time Of The Year - George Wyle (born Bernard Weissman) l'll Be Home For Christmas (Kent, Gannon, Ram -- all Jewish) Silver Bells - Livingston (born Jacob Levinson)/Evans (also Jewish) Do They Know It's Christmas? (Feed the World) - Bob Geldof Santa Baby (done by Eartha Kits) - Javits Not that it matters. Just interesting. http://www.interfaithfamily.com/arts_and_e...mas_Songs.shtml Quote

A Lark Ascending Posted August 28, 2009 Report Posted August 28, 2009 Can't wait to hear him do "Here comes Santa Claus". Though I hope he avoids 'Little Donkey'; even Emmylou couldn't prevent that one sounding mawkish. He could, however, cover a fair few things off that marvelous 'Blues, Blues Christmas' double album on Document. I could imagine a take on 'Death Will Be Your Santa Claus.' Quote
BruceH Posted August 29, 2009 Report Posted August 29, 2009 Please, Bob, don't do that fucking "Little Drummer Boy" song. Quote
Larry Kart Posted August 29, 2009 Report Posted August 29, 2009 I'm hoping "Silver Bells." His voice was made for that song. Quote
Kalo Posted August 29, 2009 Report Posted August 29, 2009 Somehow, hearing this news, I can't help but think of the comedian I saw years ago who did an imitation of Dylan reciting his prayers during his Bar Mitzvah: (cue your auto-Dylan impression now) "Ba-RUCH a-TAH a-DONOI, Elo-HENU ME-lech ha'OLAM..." Quote
blind-blake Posted August 30, 2009 Report Posted August 30, 2009 Please, Bob, don't do that fucking "Little Drummer Boy" song. Remember Bing Crosby doing that one with David Bowie. Now that was surreal! Quote
Teasing the Korean Posted September 20, 2009 Report Posted September 20, 2009 I wish I could report that the following clip is a parody, but apparently it's real: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gundu1yLjWY...feature=popular Quote

JSngry Posted September 20, 2009 Report Posted September 20, 2009 The only thing that would be better would be if would have been a duet album with Tom Waits. Quote
A Lark Ascending Posted September 20, 2009 Report Posted September 20, 2009 I suspect 'Dylan and the Dead' might just be about to lose its poll position. Quote
JSngry Posted September 20, 2009 Report Posted September 20, 2009 I think the look on the horse's faces as they escape from the album painting pretty much lets us in in the joke: Quote
