jlhoots Posted August 27, 2009 Report Posted August 27, 2009 8/29/59 Has anyone heard this? Probably a boot. Looks interesting, though. Definitely a boot. I have this on a 1990 CD release Jeal Records (Denmark) - RJD513. Sound on my copy is tolerable, the music is worth hearing. Quote
JSngry Posted August 27, 2009 Report Posted August 27, 2009 I just ordered it (through the oBoARD link) Thanksing you for the tip. Quote
jlhoots Posted August 27, 2009 Report Posted August 27, 2009 My copy does not have the last 4 "bonus" cuts. Quote
Michael Weiss Posted August 27, 2009 Report Posted August 27, 2009 The tune titles include George Russell. Can anyone post complete personnel? Quote

Chas Posted August 27, 2009 Report Posted August 27, 2009 There might be a market for another CD of this material if it had improved sound and included all 26 pieces played that evening . As it is , I doubt the four bonus tracks of 1964-era Dorham on the job in Oslo with a local rhythm section will be enough of a sweetener for most . Quote
king ubu Posted August 27, 2009 Report Posted August 27, 2009 Fascinating stuff, yes! And indeed, a legit release of the full package in good sound would be more than welcome! This was bootlegged a long time ago (the disc I have is from pretty early in the days of CDs, it seems... prob. late 80s or so) Here's the info for the bonus session: Kenny Dorham Quintet Kenny Dorham (tp) Tore Sannes (p) Bijorn Pedersen (b) Jon Christensen (d) "Metropole Jazz Club", Oslo, Norway, January, 1964 Con Alma Royal Jazz (D) RJD 515 Short Story - Sky Blue - Lament - * Kenny Dorham 1953, 1956, 1964 (Royal Jazz (D) RJD 515) Royal Jazz is indeed the label I have the Lenox stuff on, so for the reissue they just added some more from another of their discs, assuming that Free Factory is some sort of follow-up (prob. relocated to Andorra, who knows)... stuff such as this should be released by some nice official label, or officially distributed by some outlet such as Smithsonian or what do I know, even more so nowadays, when not even the few big ones do reissues of jazz anymore! AllenLowe Posted August 27, 2009 Report Posted August 27, 2009 (edited) just an interesting note - Tony Greenwald, who plays excellent trumpet on the George Russell, is now a professor (psychology or psychiatry, I can't remember) at the University of Washington. When I was working on my 1950s jazz book I called him up and he was amazed that anyone knew about it and said he was basically thrown into the water and told to swim, solo-wise. Nice guy, plays great on this recording. Edited August 27, 2009 by AllenLowe Quote
Niko Posted August 27, 2009 Report Posted August 27, 2009 definitely an interesting bunch of names... for examnple "KENT McGARITY: Trombone and Bass Trumpet. Kent played and recorded with Woody Herman, Dick Johnson, the Artie Show Orchestra and Slam Stewart, Jack Maheu & Salt City Six, Muggzie Gutt & His Matriculators and Paul Squire & the Orange Peels. Recently an original composition was premiered at the Idyllwild Jazz Festival." http://desertcitiesjazzband.com/id12.html where's Kent McGarity completing a frontline of don cherry and ornette coleman...? guess i have to check out Muggzie Gutt & His Matriculators Quote
John L Posted August 27, 2009 Report Posted August 27, 2009 This is the CD that I have. It was released quite a while ago, I believe Quote

jazzbo Posted August 27, 2009 Report Posted August 27, 2009 Psst. . . King Ubu's blog can help. Quote
clifford_thornton Posted August 27, 2009 Report Posted August 27, 2009 My eyes glossed over... yeah, that way I don't have to give the Andorrans any $$. Quote
B. Clugston Posted August 27, 2009 Report Posted August 27, 2009 It's worth hearing. Not sure if it's worth buying. Quote
mjzee Posted August 28, 2009 Author Report Posted August 28, 2009 As a lapsed-Zappaphile, it was interesting to see Ian Underwood listed. Also interesting that he seemingly went to school with Lenny Popkin, the Tristano acolyte. Quote
AndrewHill Posted August 28, 2009 Report Posted August 28, 2009 Would really like to hear this. I dig that album cover too. Quote
king ubu Posted August 28, 2009 Report Posted August 28, 2009 Yes, worth hearing, not sure it's worth owning, really... I picked mine out of a sales bin, I never pay regular price for boots. The new edition's cover looks much, much better though. I can't see sidewinder's picture (those storage sites are blocked on my work computer). Mine looks like this: This one looks great as well: Quote
