Ruby My Dear

I was surprised to find that besides the studio versions in '47, with Coltrane and later solo, this tune doesn't appear live on many Monk releases, and none that I own. I aim to change that. Any strong favorites here? Thanks, Dan

You must mean '57 and there is a version with Hawk from the same year.

It is also on a Newport date with Pee Wee, the Solo Sessions set and the second volume of the London sessions for Black Lion.

Fantastic! Newport '65 bonus disc from '63 reissue (Sony Legacy 2002) is a must. And in great, closely miked sound.

It is also on a boot of a concert from Rotterdam (October, 1967). It is true that Monk did not play Ruby, My Dear very often in concert.

Cannot think of Ruby My Dear today without hearing Carmen McRae's voice spinning in my head, her late magical performance of the tune in Carmen Sings Monk (1987), and in her Live In Montreal DVD (same year, same group).
