Johnny E Posted November 21, 2003 Report Posted November 21, 2003 Can anyone give me their opinion regarding this reissue? It looks incredible, and I've already placed the order, but while I wait for it to arrive I'd love to here what you all think. Quote
JSngry Posted November 21, 2003 Report Posted November 21, 2003 I've had this on a 1993 American Music CD for several years now, and have plugged it to all who will listen. It is simply amazing, especially the spoken segment "Playing For The Benefit Of The Band". THAT cut should be imbedded into the subconscious of every jazz musician, or anybody who even THINKS about being a jazz musician. By any means necessary. I'm serious. Might as well go whole hog and get this one too Don't ask - just buy it now and thank me later. Quote
Johnny E Posted November 21, 2003 Author Report Posted November 21, 2003 Might as well go whole hog and get this one too Don't ask - just buy it now and thank me later. I will, and I'll thank you in advance....thanks Quote
JSngry Posted November 21, 2003 Report Posted November 21, 2003 You're welcome. AND you're in for a treat. Quote
JSngry Posted November 21, 2003 Report Posted November 21, 2003 Oh, btw - what issue did you order? Is there a new one out? My American Music CD dates from 1993 and has a totally different cover. Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted November 21, 2003 Report Posted November 21, 2003 This is not the American Music stuff. This is a recent Atavistic reissue of Dodds' Folkways recordings. Quote
JSngry Posted November 21, 2003 Report Posted November 21, 2003 I thought the American Music stuff WAS the Folkways stuff. Thanks for the tip, Chuck. So...that's one that I don't have (but will order within the next few minutes) and another one that Johnny needs to order. Good news for all! Be back soon - gotta go spend some dough... Quote
JSngry Posted November 21, 2003 Report Posted November 21, 2003 Just ordered it directly from the Atavistic site: http://www.atavistic.com/artist.cfm?action...&ThisArtist=151 $13, plus unisured free shipping, $2.75 for insured shipping. Best price by far from a cursory search. Quote
mmilovan Posted November 21, 2003 Report Posted November 21, 2003 Hey people, speakin of "talking drummers"... did they reissued ON CD's Jo Jones' "007 Odissey", or whatever was the title of those LP's? Quote
jazzbo Posted November 22, 2003 Report Posted November 22, 2003 This Dodds disc is quite interesting; very nice Dodds section, very interesting remainder of the disc. Have to revisit this several more times soon. I NEED LISTENING TIME! Quote
jazzbo Posted November 22, 2003 Report Posted November 22, 2003 By the way the Sun Ra that they released alongside it is really a great release as well. Quote
BFrank Posted November 23, 2003 Report Posted November 23, 2003 It's just been added to EMusic, too. Quote
.:.impossible Posted November 26, 2003 Report Posted November 26, 2003 One of the first "jazz" CDs I ever owned. I lent it out three or four years ago and haven't heard it since. This just reminds me how much I miss it. I'll have to make an order soon! Quote
jazzbo Posted November 26, 2003 Report Posted November 26, 2003 Hmmmm. . . I didn't know this was on cd before. The brass band material that is the second half of the cd is quite interesting. Rough and raw and a trip to hear, very vocal sounding horns belting out riffs. . . . I'm going to revisit this again in the next few days. Atavistic has done a really nice job on the sound and with the notes. Quote
JSngry Posted November 26, 2003 Report Posted November 26, 2003 I didn't know it had been on CD either, Lon. I'd been hearing for years about the legendary Baby Dodds Folkways side where he taked and played, but had no luck finding the thing. Folkways had kinda become one of those labels that popped up in school libraries and no place else, at least in my neck of the woods. So when I came across the American Music CD (the result of one of my periodic bug-up-my-ass searches to find this stuff), I carpe diemed, and added the NEW ORLEANS DRUMS CD to the purchase for the solo drum sides contained therein. I just assumed that the AM stuff and the Folkways stuff were one and the same. I mean, how may records of Baby Dodds talking and playing could there be? More than one, apparently, and as soon as the Atavistic order arrive, I think I'll have everything available as far as Baby Dodds talking and playing solo drums, which makes me really happy, becasue the cat was a BAAAAAADDD mothaphukker. If there's more, I wanna know. Quote
jazzbo Posted November 26, 2003 Report Posted November 26, 2003 Yeah, you won't be disappointed, and I think this is likely all that there is. Which may be too bad, but it's nice that it all is out again! Quote
.:.impossible Posted November 26, 2003 Report Posted November 26, 2003 This is it, right here: The Atavistic track listing is different, but the idea is the same. Excellent, excellent, excellent. Quote
JSngry Posted November 26, 2003 Report Posted November 26, 2003 Yeah, dude, that's the American Music stuff. Excellent indeed, and damn near essential in my opinion. Quote
jazzbo Posted November 27, 2003 Report Posted November 27, 2003 But that is NOT the cd that this thread was started for! Now there are TWO Dodds talkin' and drummin' cds in print! Life is GOOD! B) Quote
DrJ Posted November 27, 2003 Report Posted November 27, 2003 I've been eyeing the new Atavistic Dodds...so now I got TWO of his CDs to pick up instead of one! Quote
JSngry Posted November 27, 2003 Report Posted November 27, 2003 Three, Dude. Unless you already have that NEW ORLEANS DRUMS disc. You'll want that one too (and not just for Dodds!). Trust me. Quote
Harold_Z Posted November 27, 2003 Report Posted November 27, 2003 There's the American Music GHB release...that's from a film short if I remember correctly... AND there's the new disc which is a reissue of the Folkways 10" lp (and I guess there was a 78 release also). ...and I wholeheartedly agree with all the praise lavished heretofore upon these invaluable recordings.... Now I wanna check out what's on that JAZZ ARCHIVES NEW ORLEANS DRUMS before I score to see if I have it on other issues, Quote
couw Posted November 27, 2003 Report Posted November 27, 2003 for those who haven't seen it yet: The First Drum Video Ever (Quicktime) Quote
.:.impossible Posted November 27, 2003 Report Posted November 27, 2003 But that is NOT the cd that this thread was started for! Now there are TWO Dodds talkin' and drummin' cds in print! Life is GOOD! B) True... I just saw Baby Dodds solo drums and got excited. Quote
couw Posted November 27, 2003 Report Posted November 27, 2003 Off Topic: I took a look at some other video clips at that site I linked to. Who's the tenor player in the Blakey video? Is it Gilmore maybe? Quote
