king ubu Posted August 13, 2009 Report Posted August 13, 2009 ah, crap! he wasn't that old... have to spin that magnificient duo album w/Coltrane again soon, some of the strongest music I've ever heard there! Quote
Lazaro Vega Posted August 13, 2009 Report Posted August 13, 2009 Man, that is sad! Have been enjoying that quintet he's led for the past few years as recorded in Survival Records. Quote
John L Posted August 13, 2009 Report Posted August 13, 2009 (edited) Damn! Sad and unexpected. I saw him last year, and he was as alive as anybody I've ever seen or heard. RIP Edited August 13, 2009 by John L Quote
J.A.W. Posted August 13, 2009 Report Posted August 13, 2009 he wasn't that old... He was 74. Sad news indeed. Quote

sonnymax Posted August 13, 2009 Report Posted August 13, 2009 Rashied's brother Muhammad sat in for him in a performance with Charles Gayle and William Parker at the Newport Jazz Festival last Sunday. We were told Rashied had been ill and "just needed some more time to rest." As others have said, this is very sad news and my thoughts are with his family and friends. Quote
ghost of miles Posted August 13, 2009 Report Posted August 13, 2009 Rashied's brother Muhammad sat in for him in a performance with Charles Gayle and William Parker at the Newport Jazz Festival last Sunday. TOUCHIN' ON TRANE w/Gayle and Parker is another Ali fave of mine, along with the previously mentioned INTERSTELLAR SPACE. I've heard only a little of the Survival stuff but liked it quite a lot. Guest Bill Barton Posted August 13, 2009 Report Posted August 13, 2009 R.I.P. Another Master and Elder has moved on... Playin' with Trane in interstellar space... My sincere condolences to his family, friends and many colleagues. He was still playing at the very highest level. The recent trio CD with Hal Galper and Reggie Workman makes that abundantly clear. fasstrack Posted August 13, 2009 Report Posted August 13, 2009 Very sad news! http://www.rashiedali.org/Oh, Jeez. Well, these cats had great lives, at least, and knew it. How many people can say that? Quote
Chalupa Posted August 13, 2009 Report Posted August 13, 2009 Very, very sad day. I saw Rashied perform about 10 times the past 7 or 8 years. He was always nothing less than spectacular. R.I.P. Quote
peterintoronto Posted August 13, 2009 Report Posted August 13, 2009 An absolute giant. His music and legacy will live on forever! Quote

AndrewHill Posted August 13, 2009 Report Posted August 13, 2009 (edited) Sad news indeed. Favorites are the aforementioned Interstellar Space and Touchin' on Trane, where his playing never took a moment to rest; what an intense player! edit to mention another great one with LeRoy Jenkins: Swift are the Winds of Life! sidewinder Posted August 13, 2009 Report Posted August 13, 2009 Damn - this is a shock. I'd hoped to see him live but never did I'm afraid. Like Les Paul, he left a major mark though. RIP. Quote
paul secor Posted August 13, 2009 Report Posted August 13, 2009 Thanks for the music you gave us, Mr. Ali. Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted August 13, 2009 Report Posted August 13, 2009 Haven't seen him perform in the last few years but have vivid memories of seeing/hearing him (the first time) with Coltrane at the Plugged Nickel. Quote
