.:.impossible Posted November 20, 2003 Report Posted November 20, 2003 I'm not sure if I have my terminology correct. I will try to explain though. I am listening to the K2 remaster. It sounds beautiful. The piano is in the right channel, bass in front of the left channel, and kit in the back of the left channel, as I hear it. It dawned on me that when I was there last December, the Geri Allen trio set up exactly opposite. Geri was to the left, Billy Hart to the right, and Buster Williams right of center. I am wondering if piano trios generally set up one way or the other at the Vanguard? Or is the Bill Evans recording inaccurate in this respect? Thanks. Quote
kh1958 Posted November 20, 2003 Report Posted November 20, 2003 With one exception, every time I've been the the Village Vanguard (probably only 30 times or so, unfortunately), the piano has been set up on the left, the bass in the middle and the drums on the right. The only exception I recollect was Cyrus Chestnut, who set up on the right, with the drums on the left. Quote
.:.impossible Posted November 20, 2003 Author Report Posted November 20, 2003 OK, so it is possible that Bill Evans set up on the right. Anyone else seen a piano trio at the VV? Thanks kh. Quote
wolff Posted November 20, 2003 Report Posted November 20, 2003 I wish I had that recording, but I've never gotten around to getting it. I here it's one of the best. Not to be a smart ass , but if the recording is inaccurate you could reverse the channels on your stereo and it would be accurate. Quote
kh1958 Posted November 20, 2003 Report Posted November 20, 2003 When the drums are on the right, sort of behind the pillar, they sound perfect--the best drum sound I've ever heard live. When they were set up on the left at the Cyrus Chestnut appearance I saw, the balance is not right, with the drums being too loud for me. Quote
