JSngry Posted November 19, 2003 Report Posted November 19, 2003 If you dig Sonny Red, it's a sure thing. The supporting casts are all in quite good form. If you don't dig Sonny Red, it's probably the one set you'll not mind having in your collection. Probably his most "controlled" playing, technically. on record, and that seems to be the one aspect of his playing that bothers some people. Quote
Dan Gould Posted November 19, 2003 Report Posted November 19, 2003 This is one of the best twp-fers Fantasy has put out, IMO. Quote
jazzhound Posted November 19, 2003 Author Report Posted November 19, 2003 cool. I need a push in order to spend 18 bucks on a cd. the only thing I heard of him was his Out of the Blue lp which I loved and sure enough is a rare and expensive vinyl piece. off to Tower! Quote
couw Posted November 19, 2003 Report Posted November 19, 2003 this is the Red, Blue & Green disk, yes? Quote
Brad Posted November 19, 2003 Report Posted November 19, 2003 I like it. What's not to like: Sonny Red, Blue Mitchell and Grant Green. Even if you're not the hugest Sonny fan, I still think it's a good pick up. Quote
Matthew Posted November 19, 2003 Report Posted November 19, 2003 (edited) I like it. What's not to like: Sonny Red... Stop! With the name of Sonny Red appearing, that's enough to keep me from buying it. Edited November 19, 2003 by Matthew Quote
king ubu Posted November 19, 2003 Report Posted November 19, 2003 Sonny Red – Red, Blue & Green That's what you get exactly on the disc: (A) May 29, 1961 Sonny Red (as), Cedar Walton (p), George Tucker (B), Jimmy Cobb (d). CD-Track-Number I Like The Likes Of You Duke-Harburg 4.19 2 Bye, Bye Blues Red 4.30 4 Never, Never Land Comden-Green-Styne 6.31 6 Ko-Kee Red 4.12 7 (B) June 25, 1961 Blue Mitchell (t), Sonny Red (as), Barry Harris (p), George Tucker (B), Lex Humphries (d). Images Red 6.25 8 Blues For Donna Red 4.44 9 Dodge City Red 5.16 10 © December 14, 1961 Sonny Red (as), Barry Harris (p), Grant Green (g, out on 6), George Tucker (B), Jimmy Cobb (d). Moon River Mancini-Mercer 6.08 1 Super-20 Red 5.32 3 The Mode Red 8.51 5 Blue Sonny Red 8.29 11 The Rhythm Thing Red 5.06 12 Bewitched, Bothered & Bewildered Rodgers-Hart 5.41 13 Tracks 1-7 originally issued as The Mode (Jazzland 959) Tracks 8-13 originally issued as Images (Jazzland 974) I like it very much. Then there's an even better (in my opinion, of course) Cliff Jordan twofer, called "Mosaic", which holds a very good Jordan date, coupled with an album Red and Jordan co-led. ubu Quote
