Tim McG Posted July 21, 2009 Report Posted July 21, 2009 (edited) The Irish/American NYC English teacher who wrote Angela's Ashes died today after a battle with cancer. He was 78. Source: Author Frank MCourt Dies My favorite book of his was, as you might expect, Teacher Man. I'll hoist a pint of Guinness in your honor tonight. Rest in Peace, Mr. McCourt. zen archer Posted July 21, 2009 Report Posted July 21, 2009 That is spooky, when did he die? I met a friend last for ice cream and he asked me if I read Angela's Ashes and then he mentioned MCourt , I don't believe he knew he died? Quote

fasstrack Posted July 21, 2009 Report Posted July 21, 2009 I'm gonna have to read it now. You shamed me. Hope it's half as good as Manchild or Straight Life. I like that as a teacher when his students brought in absence notes he made them write notes excusing them as Adam and Eve. Quote
Tim McG Posted July 22, 2009 Author Report Posted July 22, 2009 (edited) Read Teacher Man. It will give you insight well beyond your expectations. Edited July 22, 2009 by GoodSpeak Quote
Royal Oak Posted July 22, 2009 Report Posted July 22, 2009 Read his obit today in The Telegraph; interesting to read that his mother denounced "Angela's Ashes" as lies. This wouldn't be the first "misery lit" book to have been questioned by those who "were there" - didn't Dave Pelzer's family say much the same? I know there has been a recent court case in the UK where the mother of one of these authors has sued her daughter for something like libel or defamation. Quote

Well, it has been my experience [both professional and personal] that a child abuser rarely admits anything ever happened. Quote
Jazzmoose Posted July 23, 2009 Report Posted July 23, 2009 It's been my experience that no two people remember (or even experience) the same event in the same way. So it's entirely possible that neither side is lying. But please don't quote me on this on the political forum... Quote
