Tom 1960 Posted July 20, 2009 Report Posted July 20, 2009 I purchased a bunch of titles off the VSOP/MODE label some months back and came across the name Herbie Harper. Didn't purchase at the time any of his sessions. I really don't know much about the guy except he was from the west coast and played trombone. I came across a couple titles he recorded back in the mid 50's, Herbie Harper Sextet and Five Brothers. He also recorded an album for the label back in 1989 which looks pretty interesting called Two Brothers which features Bill Perkins. Any thoughts on these releases? As always your input is much appreciated. Quote
BruceH Posted July 20, 2009 Report Posted July 20, 2009 I've got the Herbie Harper Sextet Mode/VSOP album. I like it. Nothing earthshaking, it won't change your life, just good, entertaining straightforward jazz. In a bop vein. Quote
Big Beat Steve Posted July 20, 2009 Report Posted July 20, 2009 Same opinion here for his 50s LPs on Nocturne, Tampa LP-11 and Bethlehem BCP 1025. No trailblazer (there'd not be nearly enough trails if everybody went out on a totally new one :D) but very swinging, verys enjoyable 50s straightforward modern jazz with good blowing. Quote
king ubu Posted July 20, 2009 Report Posted July 20, 2009 Yeah, same here... nice music, but there are several Mode/VSOPs I'd get before that! Quote
