A Lark Ascending Posted July 19, 2009 Report Posted July 19, 2009 From: http://www.spincds.com/ Joni Mitchell - Forthcoming Box Set From Rhino "In November 2009, Rhino will be releasing a Joni Mitchell box set. The 4 CD and 1 DVD package will have over 85 songs, from the mid-sixties up to Joni's last album "Shine". Several unreleased songs and alternate versions will be included, plus very rare and previously unissued video performances spanning Joni's career. Joni will be contributing notes to the package and overseeing the photo edit and design" More news as it emerges and a price and a chance to 'pre-order'. There's also another Richard Thompson retrospective on the way: http://www.spincds.com/product.asp?id=9020971 My charitable side tells me that every few years a new audience exists, unfamiliar with this music, that will benefit from this repackaging. The cynic in me tells me that as album sales vanish into downloads the record companies are desparately trying to create marvels of packaging that might boost sales. I've nothing against this sort of thing...I've been introduced to many a performer through such boxes. But both Mitchell and Thompson have original albums in need of better remastering. I do wish the effort had gone there! Quote

jostber Posted July 25, 2009 Report Posted July 25, 2009 (edited) Well, the Richard Thompson set looks like something! I have the "Watching The Dark" box set from 1993, but this seems like a better song selection covering more, and the new set probably will have much better sound. My experience with Shout Factory releases is that they are careful with their mastering, like with the Chet Baker "Career: 1952-1988" 2 CD. Edited July 25, 2009 by jostber Quote
jazzbo Posted July 25, 2009 Report Posted July 25, 2009 The Young reissues have already appeared here in the US, a few weeks ago. I dont' know if they're related in anyway to his Archive box set(s) release. . . Young's quirky attitude to the catalog is the factor, most likely. I'd love to see Joni Mitchell reissues, especially Hissing of Summer Lawns and Hejira. Quote

My experience with Shout Factory releases is that they are careful with their mastering, like with the Chet Baker "Career: 1952-1988" 2 CD. Whew, 16 years since Watching The Dark! This does seem like a sensible set as his self-released bootleg set was too sprawling and had sound quality issues. It's remarkable how many labels the 4 disc box covers. I noticed it grabs 1 live track from Watching The Dark. Boxes are now covering boxes. Joni's Asylum output was remastered in '97 as HDCD releases but I suppose that was 12 years ago...Perhaps they're too bright or brittle for some. It's a box happy time for elderly rock & pop artists. There's an alternate happy Rod Stewart 4 disc set that seems to be modeled along the lines of 5 Guys Walk Into A Bar - and like that set it's coming out on Rhino. That it goes as far out as 1998 scares me though the thought of things being more stripped-down makes me curious. This isn't something I would have been the least bit interested in a few years ago but I suppose reliving the Faces material with the last box at least has me thinking about it (probably used.) No interest at all, but the Bee Gees are releasing a 4 disc set with each disc devoted to a brother (gasp, socialism has invaded the box sets!) But there were only 3 Bee Gees right? 1 disc is for Andy. Eeeeew. This was announced after the news of The Beatles box so once again they're following. And for no good reason at all The Stones stuff on Rolling Stones Records is being thrown in a box without any extras and without Exile On Main St. which is withheld as it's currently getting some kind of Deluxe treatment. Actually I'm not sure of there not being extras as just the thought of owning Dirty Work on CD made me stop reading. Throw it together in a box and some old fogey might just buy it! I wouldn't be without that one! I know, I got it on a curious lark and was blown away. As for Joni, the only stuff I really got into was the Asylum material. But whatever, it'll move units and if it's done up nicely, who cares? Quote

JSngry Posted August 1, 2009 Report Posted August 1, 2009 Annie Haslam colaborated with Roy Wood, but Joni collaborated with Wayne Shorter, so...there you go! Quote
felser Posted August 2, 2009 Report Posted August 2, 2009 Still? The Five Guys Walk into a Bar set is very very nice. Yes, which completely explodes my initial grumble. I wouldn't be without that one! Yeah, except they were done by the mid-70's. Reading on the Rhino site, 2/3 of the Rod box comes from the 80's and 90's. You really want to lay down your hard-earned $ for latter-day Rod outtakes? Quote

You really want to lay down your hard-earned $ for latter-day Rod outtakes? Different box. The one that explodes Bev's initial grumble and Clifford thinks is very very nice (me too) is 5 Guys Walk Into A Bar... The other Rod box that I linked to above and stated misgivings about has yet to receive any positive comment. The Rhino write up claims it's better than we might think, or something like that. Quote

I'm sorry, I totally misread your name and thought you were someone else who might need some explaining. (No I hadn't been drinking then, though I am now. ) I completely agree about not trusting the Rhino writer, though a small part of me wants to just a little, thinking there might be some rough-edged loose raw Rod kind of vocals on the new set. But yeah, going into the '90s is scary. I'm not brave enough to go there without reviews, samples, probably dirt cheap pricing & so on. Hey, if all of us have helped sell some more 5 Guys Walked Into A Bar... sets, we've done some good in this world! Edited August 2, 2009 by Quincy Quote

Looking at the track list, aside from maybe a few more songs off Small Town Romance they got it right. Anybody wanting to have a great Richard Thompson collection that new box would be perfect. I usually have gripes with stuff that got left off but not with that. Quote
