clifford_thornton Posted July 14, 2009 Report Posted July 14, 2009 (edited) I have SOME of this stuff but not ALL of it. I don't believe this is anywhere near-exhaustive as a Debut boxed set - in fact, I seem to remember a different big-box set preceding this one - but is the $40 sale price worth it? I have the Massey Hall, St. Nick's, Bohemia, Dorham and Bley. Don't have the Four Trombones, the Teo or the Bud. Edited July 14, 2009 by clifford_thornton Quote
blajay Posted July 14, 2009 Report Posted July 14, 2009 I had the exact same thought this morning. Quote

king ubu Posted July 14, 2009 Report Posted July 14, 2009 Yeah, I got mine much cheaper, it's nice to have - also it does contain some things not on the big Mingus Debut 12CD set (which is great, too). Quote
WD45 Posted July 14, 2009 Report Posted July 14, 2009 (edited) I have the Prestige Story set [similar deal - label retrospective.] It is more listenable than I anticipated. Generally, I would prefer the full albums, but it is great as it is. Will probably pick this set up from Newbury, too! Edited July 14, 2009 by WD45 Quote

True Blue Music isn't bad either, but unfortunately their prices are rather high in comparison. Quote
clifford_thornton Posted July 14, 2009 Author Report Posted July 14, 2009 Well hopefully they don't have just "one" and I can buy it tomorrow. Quote
jazzbo Posted July 15, 2009 Report Posted July 15, 2009 They probably have more than one. I bought one from them about two years ago! Quote
sidewinder Posted July 15, 2009 Report Posted July 15, 2009 I think I picked mine up for about 9 Euros from zweitausendeins, back when they had that amazing Fantasy box set sale some years ago. It has some Alonzo Levister material that is not on the big 10CD Mingus Debut box set, among other things. Definitely worth rooting for at $15 ! Quote

I have the Massey Hall, St. Nick's, Bohemia, Dorham and Bley. Don't have the Four Trombones, the Teo or the Bud. the teo stuff didn't make it to the set (though it's mentioned in the booklet as if it was) due to some legal conflicts... that alonzo levister track is cool, you get most of the teddy charles/miles davis album if you don't have it anyway, a john dennis solo track which is nice (also a trio one), a surprisingly good clarinet piece by sam most (?), some john laporta... plus a bunch of mingus, some of that shafi hadi/gene shaw session and that jimmy knepper/joe maini/bill triglia session... mostly only two tracks of a thing but good ones... it's a nicely done box set... thinking about it, of all the compilations i have this is the one that made me buy the most individual albums afterwards (dorham, knepper/maini, john dennis, shafi hadi, pettiford... and i'm not yet done, still missing at least the thad jones, maybe the mingus/nadi qamar, the ada moore...)) king ubu Posted July 15, 2009 Report Posted July 15, 2009 Yeah, I'd love to hear more of that Sam Most session! The LaPorta is by now on a great Lonehill set (which also adds some unnecessary fillers, such as one part of the "Theme and Variations" Fantasy twofer-CD). Quote

blajay Posted July 15, 2009 Report Posted July 15, 2009 How's the booklet, if there is one? I'm particularly interested not just because of the music but also because of the history of the Mingus/Roach label. Quote

I'm particularly interested not just because of the music but also because of the history of the Mingus/Roach label. nice! i'd say three pages about the history of the label and then discussion of artists and session, going from memory i'd say three sessions per page (50% text, 50% pictures), photos of most performers, reproductions of all the original covers (all on two pages, so they're tiny...)... it's not uptown records but besides that it's really fine... here's an old article on alonzo levister btw http://news.google.com/newspapers?id=0O0QA...alonzo-levister Edited July 15, 2009 by Niko Quote
king ubu Posted July 15, 2009 Report Posted July 15, 2009 Yes, very good booklet I found, very informative! Quote
ghost of miles Posted July 15, 2009 Report Posted July 15, 2009 Very good booklet. I'd say that all of the anthologies that Fantasy put out in the 1990s are worth picking up, if you can find them at affordable prices...here's a brief write-up I did on the West Coast jazz set. Quote
blajay Posted July 15, 2009 Report Posted July 15, 2009 Perfect. Thanks a lot everyone! I'll definitely order one. Quote
JSngry Posted July 16, 2009 Report Posted July 16, 2009 Them that wants the Teo material can find it here: http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/teomacero13 Recommended. Quote
clifford_thornton Posted July 16, 2009 Author Report Posted July 16, 2009 Thanks. I only have the date with the Prestige Jazz Quartet and that's such a fine record... Quote
JSngry Posted July 16, 2009 Report Posted July 16, 2009 If you got some mad money and feel like using it, check out some of the other Teo offerings from CD Baby. Some good stuff in there. Quote
randyhersom Posted July 16, 2009 Report Posted July 16, 2009 This thread prompted me to discover that Concord's site is now selling MP3s of John Dennis - New Jazz Expressions, which is excerpted on this anthology. I think I'll grab them in a couple weeks. Quote
