Joe G Posted July 14, 2009 Report Posted July 14, 2009 From the comments: Pears soap - the only thing known to get ALL the grime off of horrible mutant babies, with half the fuss. Still can't get past the douching with Lysol ad, either. Quote
Claude Posted July 14, 2009 Report Posted July 14, 2009 Wow, that Daisy gun ad seems to come right out of Mad Magazine. Quote
Jim Alfredson Posted July 14, 2009 Report Posted July 14, 2009 Still can't get past the douching with Lysol ad, either. Yeah, that was the other one that was really disturbing. Quote
Jim Alfredson Posted July 14, 2009 Report Posted July 14, 2009 I like this comment, too: I can hear it now..."Great ads, boys! Let's call it a day, shall we? I gotta get home and beat the shit out of my wife." Quote
Cliff Englewood Posted July 14, 2009 Report Posted July 14, 2009 I thought the ads that are around today were fucked up but these ones, WTF, just unbelievable. Quote
Alexander Posted July 14, 2009 Report Posted July 14, 2009 (edited) I can't upload it because the file is too big, but I have this great ad for Pears Soap in a book. It depicts two children: One white and one black (the black child has buckwheat-style hair and giant pop-eyes). In the first of the two images, the black child is climbing into a bathtub where he is to be washed by the white child with Pears Soap. In the second panel, the black child is now white from the neck down. Attached is an image I found online. It's not as good as the scan I made from my book, but it will give you an idea of what the ad looks like. Isn't that awesome?! Edited July 14, 2009 by Alexander Quote
Hot Ptah Posted July 14, 2009 Report Posted July 14, 2009 (edited) That is unbelievable, Alexander. Another type of vintage ad which I find creepy is the physician endorsement of cigarette ad. There were many of them, for most (if not all) of the major brands. Here is just one example: Edited July 14, 2009 by Hot Ptah Quote

Jim Alfredson Posted July 14, 2009 Report Posted July 14, 2009 I don't think it would keep people smoking. The nicotine does that. They are just trying to get people to switch brands. Quote
BruceH Posted July 14, 2009 Report Posted July 14, 2009 I don't think it would keep people smoking. The nicotine does that. They are just trying to get people to switch brands. And not worry about cigarettes having any unhealthy aspects. Hey, if doctors use'em, they MUST be safe! Quote
Brownian Motion Posted July 14, 2009 Author Report Posted July 14, 2009 That is unbelievable, Alexander. Another type of vintage ad which I find creepy is the physician endorsement of cigarette ad. There were many of them, for most (if not all) of the major brands. Here is just one example: Makes me think of my father-in-law, who was a general surgeon. After he retired to Florida he would occasionally be asked to lend an air of importance to various charitable gatherings. I remember rummaging through a box of photos at his home, and coming upon a newspaper photo of him addressing the local American Cancer Society chapter. With the news clipping was the original photo; the editor had cropped the cigarette my father-in-law was holding as he spoke. He died of lung cancer, incidentally. Quote
Cliff Englewood Posted July 15, 2009 Report Posted July 15, 2009 I don't know why I'm posting this as some people might not get it, but this ad is kinda infamous over this side of the pond, it's just a bit wrong somehow. Quote

Yep. Don't get it. Seems like it's reaching to get some kind of dirty double meaning out of it. It is possible for an older person to share something with a child without it being perverted! Quote
Jazzmoose Posted July 16, 2009 Report Posted July 16, 2009 I remember that commercial. Seemed a bit old fashioned (which I guess was the point), but I don't see how it could be misconstrued. More of a rorshach test than a problem, I'd say... Quote
jostber Posted July 16, 2009 Report Posted July 16, 2009 Another vintage ad with many meanings? More: A feisty one: Health: Quote
Jazzmoose Posted July 16, 2009 Report Posted July 16, 2009 I've seen the "laid by the best" ad before; excellent! Quote
BruceH Posted July 17, 2009 Report Posted July 17, 2009 (edited) I don't know...that cola ad is pretty great too! How soon is too soon? Apparently ten months or so is just fine! Edited July 17, 2009 by BruceH Quote
Jazzmoose Posted July 17, 2009 Report Posted July 17, 2009 Yeah, I remember being in tears when I left the hospital after being born. I couldn't talk yet, so I couldn't explain how all the other kids had been nipping RC Cola for days, while I had to settle for milk... Quote
Alexander Posted July 17, 2009 Report Posted July 17, 2009 Whatever happened to the Soda Pop Board of America? What is their position on the Economic Downturn? Should we be drinking more cola?! Quote
