BeBop Posted July 7, 2009 Report Posted July 7, 2009 (edited) I'll be traveling with two computers for a while (it's a test). My work computer will, of course, be directed to a suitable page for my professional duties. I could set my personal computer to this forum and probably be happy and reasonably well-informed...at least about CD sales. But ideally, I'd like a customizable page, perhaps with RSS feeds, where I could nix the undesireables (sports, celebrity worship, movies, TV) and populate it with cool stuff, as defined by my admittedly unorthodox tastes. Thoughts? Use something like AOL or CNN and, if you cut out the sports, celebrities, movies and TV, you get a blank page. Edited July 24, 2009 by BeBop Quote
Harold_Z Posted July 7, 2009 Report Posted July 7, 2009 I have google news on my home computer and Yahoo on my office PC. Both give a good choice on content but I think Yahoo has the edge. Quote
alocispepraluger102 Posted July 7, 2009 Report Posted July 7, 2009 http://www.dvorak.org/home.htm this alltext no ads page will take you lots of places. make the homepage this page stored on the hard drive and you wont even have to boot it up. i have used this page, with a few updates, for easily a dozen years. mellowT Posted July 7, 2009 Report Posted July 7, 2009 This seems like a good site, but not quite ready for customization: http://www.allmyfaves.com/ Quote

Drew Peacock Posted July 7, 2009 Report Posted July 7, 2009 Consider using iGoogle.com This has become my home page. You are able to change themes (like wallpaper) and add stuff - similar to widgets - to your page. The level of customization is impressive. I have my favorite stocks listed, dopplar radar for my neighborhood, several news sites (WSJ, NYT, Bostonherald), cheep gas in my neighborhood, sports listings, gmail, a few games, what's hot on google search (excellent widget), calander, TV Guide listings. There are plenty more widgets to choose from. You can move them around your home page so that your favorites are easily accessible. Quote
Claude Posted July 7, 2009 Report Posted July 7, 2009 I have removed the Home Page button from my browser, because I never used it. I also don't want the browser to open a specific page when I start it up. I don't need to have Google as home page, because there is already a Google search field in the browser interface. The Opera browser has a useful "Speed Dial" feature, with 9 favourite websites displayed in the background when a new tab is opened: http://arstechnica.com/old/content/2007/04...-speed-dial.ars Most of the time, I use bookmarks of my 15-20 favourite pages which I have placed on a seperate bar in the bowser window (just the favicons, to save space). BeBop Posted July 7, 2009 Author Report Posted July 7, 2009 (edited) Thanks for the suggestions. I'll probably play with them all, other than the Opera browser option, since I'm stuck with Explorer. The dvorak was my first trial. Quick and slick. Sort of a condensed version of two I used to use: CEOExpress and RefDesk Edited July 7, 2009 by BeBop Quote
mikeweil Posted July 7, 2009 Report Posted July 7, 2009 (edited) I use OPERA, which now has a starting page with fastlinks allowing to to choose beween 9 (!) different websites .... The top row are organissimo and two classical forums. Edited July 7, 2009 by mikeweil Quote

king ubu Posted July 24, 2009 Report Posted July 24, 2009 I have org as homepage and use Opera for 9 other pages... having org as homepage allows for 10 quickly accessible sites... I could use some more, really! Claude's idea sounds smart, but I'm usually too lazy to do that much customising work... Quote

You just have to select the bookmark and tick the "Show on personal bar" option, which will put the favicon and title of the bookmark on your personal bar in Opera. If you want to save space on the personal bar, you can remove the page title from the bookmark, leaving just the icon. It's like having a TV remote control with station logos instead of numbers on the program buttons These settings are saved in your Opera bookmark file (opera.adr), so if you transfer the file to another Opera installation (other PC), the same bookmarks will be on your personal bar on that computer as well.
