ghost of miles
My copy has no problems: cover is correct, cd contains fantastic music as it's supposed to! So your tracks #5 and #7 are different songs, Lon, and not different takes of "Baby Please?" Yes, everything else about the CD is indeed fantastic! I need to pick up the second Specialty CD--already have POET OF THE BLUES.
John L
I have the disc, and assumed that "Never Say Naw" is indeed a version of "Baby Please (Lost Love)." What in the liner notes led you to believe otherwise? On "Baby Please," Mayfield sticks with "Baby Please, Please Come Back to Me" all the way through. On "Never Say Naw," he shifts toward the end to "Baby Please, Don't Say Naw to Me." The two takes on "Baby, Please" are quite different. I wouldn't want to give one up, especially "Never Say Nah." John, I was going off the original album liner notes, which are printed (in small type) near the back of the booklet. The descriptions therein seem to indicate two different songs. I will listen to both tracks again tonight when I get home and re-check the liners. I also like both versions (one has a slower, moodier feel to it), but they strike me as very much the same song, and the titles were sequenced only one track apart on the original LP. That's why I find it difficult to believe, in this instance, that they are the two different songs that they're supposed to be. Perhaps Rhino's response to Hans will clarify matters. Believe me, I hope I'm wrong--I don't want to have to return the CD all over again!
John L
Understood. But here is the dilemma. Suppose you were given the option to trade in your current CD for the same one with a different song in place of the current "Never Say Naw." Myself, I might say naw. J.A.W.
I just got this reply from ICE magazine's Watchdog: Thank you, J.A.W. - we'll contact Rhino and get right on the case. Appreciate you pointing it out. With best wishes, the ICE editors
