Big Al Posted July 4, 2009 Report Posted July 4, 2009 I moved my DVD-drive out of my computer and into my son's computer, which didn't originally have a DVD-drive. MediaPlayer and RealPlayer tell me I need some kind of decoder. I've downloaded so many codecs and decoders by now, and none of them have worked, but maybe I just haven't hit the right one yet. Any advice out there? Quote
Van Basten II Posted July 4, 2009 Report Posted July 4, 2009 Never heard of using decoders to play DVDs, usually you can use the Windows media player if it does not take charge. Would say that the problem may be in the way you installed it Quote

7/4 Posted July 4, 2009 Report Posted July 4, 2009 Try using the software that came with the drive to watch DVDs. ... Quote
Kevin Bresnahan Posted July 4, 2009 Report Posted July 4, 2009 Best free movie player out there is the VideoLAN Player. Quote
Use3D Posted July 4, 2009 Report Posted July 4, 2009 http://www.cccp-project.net/ Everything you need, codecs and Media Player Classic, best I've used. Quote
Claude Posted July 4, 2009 Report Posted July 4, 2009 Windows Media Player doesn't play DVDs "out of the box". I would recommend using a different player, such as the already mentioned VLC, or Media Player Classic (my personal favourite). Both are free. http://www.free-codecs.com/download/Media_Player_Classic.htm There is no risk in installing these players. You'll be able to use all of them alternatively. Quote
Big Al Posted July 5, 2009 Author Report Posted July 5, 2009 As is usually the case whenever I post something like this, later that day, Nathan came in and told me it was working just fine. I didn't even do anything to it! Oh well, if it craps out at some point, I can come back to this thread. Thanks, guys! Quote
