Tom in RI Posted November 18, 2003 Report Posted November 18, 2003 Seems to me I read, maybe around the time that Mosaic released the Beneditti recordings, that Chan Parker had a lot of live Bird in her possesion. Has any of that been issued? Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted November 18, 2003 Report Posted November 18, 2003 My understanding: It has been shopped around to almost every recording company for 20+ years and she had no takers. Snippets, etc in bad sound. Not a complete issue worthwhile is my understanding. I think some, if not all, of this stuff has been issued by various labels. I think at least one major label bought something only to find out it had already been issued elsewhere. But then, I could happily be wrong. I think more likely sources are private collectors turning tapes over like the Bird in Boston cd I worked on. The trouble is these guys are dropping like flies and the tapes are being trashed by the heirs. You don't wanna know stories I've heard. Quote
Nate Dorward Posted November 18, 2003 Report Posted November 18, 2003 There's a hell of a lot of stuff on the Philology label, I'm not sure the provenance--the "Bird's Eyes" series. Quote
JSngry Posted November 18, 2003 Report Posted November 18, 2003 Those Open Door tapes that Ember put out were supposedly from Chan. Quote

couw Posted November 18, 2003 Report Posted November 18, 2003 uhm, Chuck, how is it going with the Townhall Gillespie Quintet release? You mentioned it would still take about half a year in July. Does that schedule still stand? Quote
medjuck Posted November 18, 2003 Report Posted November 18, 2003 Didn't the Monk estate say that they had hours of tape from Nica's apartment including stuff from Bird? Quote
jazzbo Posted November 18, 2003 Report Posted November 18, 2003 Hmmm. . . I know they have tapes indeed, but I haven't heard of any with Bird. BUT they did mention having about twenty hours of tape of the band with Paul Jeffrey, which is really good news---this was a great band that is little heard from (makes sense they would have tapes; Tootie was the drummer). John L Posted November 24, 2003 Report Posted November 24, 2003 If I am not mistaken, one of the tapes that was used for the release of the complete Rockland Palace concert (Jazz Classics CD-JZCL-5014) supposedly originated with Chan. Of course, it could have been a pirated second hand copy. Quote
Lazaro Vega Posted December 1, 2003 Report Posted December 1, 2003 Would love to hear that Monk radio broadcast from his Blue Note period come out, too. Quote
