mikeweil Posted November 17, 2003 Report Posted November 17, 2003 (edited) When I look at jazz musicians' birthdays, the diversity of artists born between 1920 and 1930 appears to me as between traditionalists with both legs in the swing camp, bebop pioneers, cool cats, hardbop heroes, studio staffmembers and freedom founders. Chuck Nessa Posted November 17, 2003 Report Posted November 17, 2003 You might add Von Freeman to 1922. Quote
mikeweil Posted November 17, 2003 Author Report Posted November 17, 2003 I knew I'd omit someone important! I'll keep the list updated, thanks for corrections. Quote
Quincy Posted November 17, 2003 Report Posted November 17, 2003 (edited) Doc Severinsen (1927) is still alive. He was listed as a surviving sibbling in his sister's obituary which appeared in our local paper in couple of months ago. Edited November 17, 2003 by Quincy Quote
brownie Posted November 17, 2003 Report Posted November 17, 2003 Zoot Sims is listed in 1925. But not Al Cohn. Born the same year. Those two go together Quote
mikeweil Posted November 17, 2003 Author Report Posted November 17, 2003 I based my first list on the revised edition of Feather's Encyclopedia and overlooked the Cohn entry; when I typed Sims, I said to myself "have to look up Cohn, but it was too late at night for my weary head to remember ... Now what do you all think about the characteristics of that birth decade? Quote

brownie Posted November 18, 2003 Report Posted November 18, 2003 Now what do you all think about the characteristics of that birth decade? A very impressive list. But I am from an older generqaion and always thought that the 20th Century's first decade had also produced quite an impressive list. Here is what I came up with in a relatively short time (hard pressed for time right now and I am sure that quite a number of big names are missing): Henry Allen - Albert Ammons - Ivie Anderson - Jimmy Archey - Louis Armstrong - Buster Bailey - Mildred Bailey - Ray Bauduc - Bix Beiderbecke - Bunny Berrigan - Sidney Catlett - Shirley Clay - Cozy Cole - Eddie Condon - Bud Freeman - Stephane Grapelli - Edmond Hall - Lionel Hampton - Milt Hinton - Budd Johnson (and brother Keg) - Jonah Jones - Louis Jordan - Max Kaminsky - John Kirby - Eddie Lang (and Joe Venuti) - Jimmy McPartland - Louis Metcalf - Bubber Miley - Jelly Roll Morton -Phil Napoleon -Red Norvo - Hot Lips Page - Walter Page - Ward Pinkett - Sammy Price - Ben Pollack - Jack Purvis - Django Reinhardt - Pee Wee Russell - Muggfsy Spanier - Jess Stacy - Rex Stewart - Joe Sullivan - Frank Teschemaker - Frankie Trumbauer - Arthur Wetsol - Fats Waller - Chick Webb - Paul Webster - Mary Lou Williams, TENORS ANYONE? Chu Berry - Happy Caldwell - Hershel Evans - Coleman Hawkins - Lester Young SOME SMITH? Ben - Buster - Jabbo - Pine Top -Stuff - Tab - Willie (not the Lion) SOME THOMAS? Foots - Joe (JR Morton sax player) - Joe (Lunceford sax player) - Joe (trumpet player) MORE TROMBONES? Lawrence Brown - Jimmy Harrison - Benny Morton - Tricky Sam Nanton - Juan Tizol - Dicky Wells - Sandy Williams SOME ALTOS? Buster Smith - Bennie Carter - Johnny Hodges - Charlie Holmes -Hilton Jefferson- Russell Procope - Rudy Powell, BANDLEADERS? Count Basie - Cab Calloway - Jimmy Dorsey - Tommy Dorsey - Benny Goodman - Glenn Miller - Don Redman - Luis Russell - Artie Shaw Any point in comparing? Let's just enjoy good music from any era Quote
Brad Posted November 18, 2003 Report Posted November 18, 2003 Who is A.K. Salim (b. 1922)? I'd recommend A.K. Salim's Pretty for the People, reissued by Savoy a couple of years ago. You may still be able to pick it up. Quote

mikeweil Posted November 19, 2003 Author Report Posted November 19, 2003 ... and always thought that the 20th Century's first decade had also produced quite an impressive list. ... Any point in comparing? Let's just enjoy good music from any era Well, you list musicians born between 1890 (Jelly Roll Morton) and 1919, so the comparison does not quite apply. I think this one decade produced MORE musicians shaping the music, and the range of the music they practiced is much broader: from trad to free. And it reflects the attractivity a life as a jazz musician must have had for young cats growing up in the swing era. I enjoy these elders too, of course Quote

I'm too lazy ... I´ll do it for you, when I have time I extracted my list from my database on Access. It´s a handmade one with almost 3.000 jazz artists/orchestras (virtually all with date of birth/death), and more than 16.000 songs (virtually all with composer/s data). I have a lot of data for each CD, but no specific information for each session : I enter "collective personnel" for each CD and a recording date like "1955 (55-59)" for sessions from 1955 to 1959. brownie Posted November 20, 2003 Report Posted November 20, 2003 Well, you list musicians born between 1890 (Jelly Roll Morton) and 1919 The Jelly Roll inclusion was a typo. Stupid mistake As mentioned at the start of the post, this was done very quickly. Think the rest of the list is accurate for musicians born between 1900 and 1910. Who's from 1919. If you refer to Tab Smith as being born in 1919 (as listed by EKE BBB), my reference books list him as being born in 1909 -_- Quote
mikeweil Posted November 20, 2003 Author Report Posted November 20, 2003 Brownie - didn't want to be picky, didn't have the time for an closer look, so you maybe right, and I was too fast. Tab Smith was indeed born in 1909. Thanks EKE BBB - nice job. 1909 was a great year! Quote
mikeweil Posted November 20, 2003 Author Report Posted November 20, 2003 If I'm correct, the only still alive born before 1920 are George Shearing and Al McKibbon? Quote
mikeweil Posted December 26, 2003 Author Report Posted December 26, 2003 I added Buddy de Franco and Don Lamond (R.I.P.) - please correct me if i missed anyone's passing that I marked as still among us. Quote
