mikeweil Posted November 17, 2003 Report Posted November 17, 2003 (edited) This latin cat was born in Puerto Rico in 1968 and knows his horn. If you like one, you might as well get all of his six dates as a leader on Columbia: http://www.davidsanchezmusic.com/ Edited November 17, 2003 by mikeweil Quote
mikeweil Posted November 17, 2003 Report Posted November 17, 2003 (edited) BTW, a new album recorded in Prague with his quintet and an orchestra is due out soon on Columbia, "Coral". I missed him playing in Prague only by a few days earlier this years. Edited November 17, 2003 by mikeweil Quote
AfricaBrass Posted November 17, 2003 Report Posted November 17, 2003 I picked up some of his Columbia cds a couple years ago (cheaply from half.com) after seeing his name mentioned with Bobby Watson. I really liked them. I should spin them again. Quote
jlhoots Posted November 17, 2003 Report Posted November 17, 2003 I like his playing too. Just picked up Travesia in the BMG $6.99 sale. Melaza is also excellent. I believe he was a Dizzy Gillespie protege. Quote
tonym Posted November 17, 2003 Report Posted November 17, 2003 Melaza is my favourite so far, I'm not sure how authentic this is when it comes to Puerto Rican music, but it seems vibrant and steamy. When Branford somes in on one track, you have a great comparison between the two tenors. The textures are all there too....doesn't just seem like an exercise in licks over a latin beat. Heard him live on BBC Radio 3 last year and that was great too. Quote
kh1958 Posted November 17, 2003 Report Posted November 17, 2003 I saw him with Dizzy the last time I saw Dizzy--it was a great concert--an expanded group, in a double bill with Miriam Makeba. Then a few years back, at another excellent perfomance at the Village Vanguard. I like him. Quote
street singer Posted November 17, 2003 Report Posted November 17, 2003 'Street Scenes' is on sale for $1.99 at BMG right now... Quote
Tom in RI Posted November 18, 2003 Report Posted November 18, 2003 I had picked and then got rid of his first disc, The Departure, which didn't do much for me. But I've subsequently gotten Sketches of Dreams and Travesia. Looking forward to hearing Melaza. Liked what I heard on Travesia so much I subsequently ordered sideman Miguel Zenon's Fresh Sounds release. Quote
king ubu Posted January 14, 2004 Report Posted January 14, 2004 Bought Travesia today. No chance to listen yet, but thanks Mike for recommending them all! I certainly won't be disappointed! ubu Quote
David Williams Posted January 14, 2004 Report Posted January 14, 2004 I wore out the grooves on Obsesion. Quote
