jlhoots Posted June 11, 2009 Report Posted June 11, 2009 Matana Roberts BTW, not sure how this became a Bill Charlap thread, but I'll defend his New York Trio CDs on Venus. Quote
Drew Peacock Posted June 11, 2009 Report Posted June 11, 2009 Mary Halvorson is making great music. Betty Carter deserves mention if for no other reason than she was willing to put it all out there Shirley Horn - one of my all time favorites Carol Sloane - she left us to early Eliane Elias - she deserves more recognition Etta Jones - enough said and yeah, more blues than jazz Hiromi - for what she has released but mostly for her potential for greatness Jane Bunnett - at her creative peak right now Jimmy Scott - okay, that's cruel...but I'm laughing Patricia Barber - she is unique Virginia Mayhew - another talent deserving more recognition I did my best to not include vocalists but had to mention some of their names. Also, I tried not to duplicate what was posted above. Quote
jazztrain Posted June 11, 2009 Report Posted June 11, 2009 Carol Sloane is still alive and singing. Quote
Alexander Hawkins Posted June 11, 2009 Report Posted June 11, 2009 Amina Claudine Myers is a favourite! Quote
John Tapscott Posted June 11, 2009 Report Posted June 11, 2009 (edited) Pianist Jessica Williams, rather overlooked in my view (I now see that RDK mentioned her near the beginning) . I also like vocalist Roberta Gambarini. Edited June 11, 2009 by John Tapscott Quote
BeBop Posted June 11, 2009 Report Posted June 11, 2009 Pianist Jessica Williams, rather overlooked in my view (I now see that RDK mentioned her near the beginning) . I'd just dropped back into this thread to make sure Jessica had been mentioned. I grew up beneath her piano at the old Keystone Korner in San Francisco, where she was "house pianist" for quite some time. Quote
Drew Peacock Posted June 11, 2009 Report Posted June 11, 2009 Jazztrain, you're right....I'm an idiot. I had her confused with Susannah McCorkle. :blush2: Quote
Aggie87 Posted June 11, 2009 Report Posted June 11, 2009 (edited) If we're staying away from vocalists, here are some previously unmentioned female jazz musicians (that I think are better than Diana Krall): Emily Remler Cindy Blackman Sylvie Courvoisier Susie Ibarra Jenny Scheinman Jutta Hipp Anat Cohen oh yeah, and: Ruby Braff Tina Brooks Gigi Gryce Valery Ponomarev Edited June 11, 2009 by Aggie87 Quote
B. Goren. Posted June 11, 2009 Report Posted June 11, 2009 (edited) My Favorite vocalists are not jazz singers. OK, this is not exactly the topic but want to tell you that I have a special weakness to Marianne Faithful. Also Marla Glen is an amazing singer. Edited June 11, 2009 by B. Goren. Quote
Peter Friedman Posted June 11, 2009 Report Posted June 11, 2009 Bertha Hope If you are unfamiliar with her playing I recommend the 4 CDs with her as leader. Elmo's Fire (Quintet) - Steeplechase In Search Of.. (Trio) - Steeplechase Between Two Kings (Trio) - Minor Music Nothin' But Love (Trio) - Reservoir Jennifer Leitham (bass player formerly known as John) Renee Rosnes Mary Lou Williams Lorraine Geller Marian McPartland Mary Osborne (guitar) Karoline Strassmayer (alto sax) Nicki Parrott (bass) Toshiko Akiyoshi Dottie Dodgion Quote
Guest Bill Barton Posted June 11, 2009 Report Posted June 11, 2009 Wow, 35 posts and no mention yet of Satoko Fujii, who actually should probably be included twice - once as a pianist and once as an orchestra leader/composer/arranger. Quote
AndrewHill Posted June 12, 2009 Report Posted June 12, 2009 (edited) If we're staying away from vocalists, here are some previously unmentioned female jazz musicians (that I think are better than Diana Krall): Cindy Blackman Susie Ibarra Nice call. I really dig Susie's work with David S. Ware. Another hardly-mentioned female pianist is Jane Getz; dig her work with both Mingus and Sanders. Edited June 12, 2009 by Holy Ghost Quote
PHILLYQ Posted June 12, 2009 Report Posted June 12, 2009 What about Melba Liston? Or, Reptet's Samantha Boshnack- fine trumpet and fine arrangements, too! Marilyn Mazur is a very good percussionist. Quote
Uncle Skid Posted June 12, 2009 Report Posted June 12, 2009 Or, Reptet's Samantha Boshnack- fine trumpet and fine arrangements, too! In particular, her solo on Harpo from Reptet's "Do This!" always gets me. :rsmile: As mentioned earlier, Mary Halvorson (Dragon's Head is fantastic), and Ingrid Jensen. Quote
GA Russell Posted June 12, 2009 Report Posted June 12, 2009 The first three that came to mind, that I really think rise to the level of inclusion in this thread... Carla Bley ...and... Ingrid Jensen ...and... Maria Schneider. How could I forget Carla Bley??? I voted for her as Jazz Artist of the Year! And Maria Schneider's name came to me earlier this evening as well. Rooster, maybe you and I are hooked up with ESP! Quote

Bright Moments Posted June 12, 2009 Report Posted June 12, 2009 Nicki Parrott (bass) WOW!!! another nicki parrott fan!!!!! Quote
king ubu Posted June 12, 2009 Report Posted June 12, 2009 Kim Clarke! Joe Henderson once had a ladies band backing him, I think it was JoAnne Brackeen, Marlene Rosenberg and Sylvia Cuenca. Not quite jazz, but... the duo of Ikue Mori and Zeena Parkins is quite cool! Also there's Andrea Parkins, best known from Ellery Eskelin's trio (with Jim Black) Quote
flat5 Posted June 12, 2009 Report Posted June 12, 2009 Shirley Rogers played some very good piano in San Francisco in 1966. Anyone heard her since then? If you Google her (she is over 18) you will find High School band recordings of Jon Faddis and Mel Martin. Jon burned in HS! Quote
gmonahan Posted June 12, 2009 Report Posted June 12, 2009 No one has mentioned Melba Liston, a brilliant arranger and a fine trombonist. Among singers...er...Ella?! Sarah? Carmen? And I love Shirley Horn too. greg mo Quote

ScottyWright Posted June 20, 2009 Report Posted June 20, 2009 (edited) Being a singer, I most definitely "do" vocalists; my two favorites being Sarah Vaughan, for an amazing instrument, wonderful harmonic sense and for truly deserving both her nicknames: The Divine One and Sassy. and Betty Carter, for her uncompromising focus, her writing/arranging, and her invaluable mentorship but among instrumentalists: Mimi Fox - guitar Geri Allen - piano Eliane Elias - piano Melba Liston - trombone, arranger Terri Lynn Carrington - drums Renee Rosnes - piano Allison Miller - drums Jessica Williams - piano Edited June 20, 2009 by ScottyWright Quote
