BERIGAN Posted June 2, 2009 Report Posted June 2, 2009 (edited) Was doing a search of Fats Waller, from the low to high price, then decided to check out low to high box sets, and came across this. http://www.amazon.com/Best-Fats-Waller/dp/...5075&sr=1-2 At first, I thought no way it was a box set. $8.98??(Edit, it says $10.98, perhaps I am losing my mind) And from RCA??? But, it is. Here is a a Louis Armstrong hot 5 and 7 set, that is 4 cds, $11.98 If you look down the page, you will also see A Glenn Miler set, Billy Holiday, Ellington....That seems to be all of them. Holiday and Ellington already out of print and the used price is already climbing. Who cares you say??? Just one of millions of best of sets??? For newbies only??? Could be, but the blurb makes me wonder what's on them.... Product Description 2008 four CD set. The Original Masters series presents some of the finest recordings by many of the true Jazz legends originally signed to the RCA and Sony labels. With hits, favorites, album tracks, rarities and more, these collections are solid samplers for the aficionados and astounding introductions to those interested in investigating the roots of Jazz. This collection from the famed trumpet virtuoso and his Hot Five and Hot Seven outfits features 80 tracks including ' Struttin' With Some Barbecue', 'Got No Blues', 'Gut Bucket Blues', 'Fireworks' and many others. Sony/BMG. So, anyone grab any of these??? Edited June 2, 2009 by BERIGAN Quote
kh1958 Posted June 2, 2009 Report Posted June 2, 2009 I have the Duke Ellington set--it has 95 tracks recorded from 1932-39, including four previously unissued tracks. Transfers from 78s are by Matt Cavalazzo and Harry Coster. The reissue series is produced by Michael Brooks. A great buy. Quote

They might be thinking about leasing the Ellington stuff from Sony/BMG, but that doesn't mean they've promised to release it. And you'd better not count on anything in the current economic climate. poetrylover3 Posted June 2, 2009 Report Posted June 2, 2009 Both the Ellington and Fats Waller are first rate and filled in some nice gaps in my collection. Quote

Well, no guarantees I will actually get it since it is backordered, but Amazon.co.uk is selling this at a low price, and even with shipping it is better than the used copies sold on Amazon.com. I figured it was worth a shot. You could take a look here: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Columbia-Original-...f=pd_sim_m_h__2 Quote

Again, they didn't promise anything and, as I said, with the current economic climate it doesn't seem likely anything will happen soon. Why do you think some of their sets have been on back-order for months now? I don't think the fact that you're a bit irritated will change a thing... Edited June 3, 2009 by J.A.W. Quote
medjuck Posted June 3, 2009 Report Posted June 3, 2009 I'd like a Mosaic of the Ellington too, but if you have the Sony set and track down a couple of Ivie Anderson cds you'l have almost everything Duke released on Columbia in that period. (Of course then you need the RCA box and the Decca set to be nearly complete. ) Quote
Cliff Englewood Posted June 6, 2009 Report Posted June 6, 2009 That's a bit mad/bad/sad that the Ellington is OOP already, that's slightly less that a year since it was released, and why is it gone if the others still available??? I thought the Billie Holiday and Louis Armstrong sets would have gone first. Quote
king ubu Posted June 7, 2009 Report Posted June 7, 2009 dammit... missed the Ellington (it was listed as "in stock" when I ordered, but it was gone already, it seems...), and now they keep the Lady Day back, which should have been a gift for my mother's birthday and hence should have arrived next week - sucks! They should at least admit their fault and send out the in stock items immediately! Quote

jazzbo Posted June 7, 2009 Report Posted June 7, 2009 The longevity of these sets may be limited in the way that ''Sony Special Products" cds used to be in the nineties. I have encountered some of these (like a two cd set of Miles Davis "Big Fun" and a combo cd of Newport performances from Armstrong and Ellington, "The Okeh Record Story" and there are more) that I saw and purchased in the stores and within six months they were nowhere to be found. I think they had one bare bones run of pressings and that was it Anyone pining for the Waller could look for the three cds box set "If You Got to Ask You Ain't Got It" . . . same material, fantastic restoration (I haven't heard the budget box but imagine it's the same mastering) and a fantastic, I do mean fanstastic, booklet.
