Vincent, Paris Posted November 15, 2003 Report Posted November 15, 2003 I just bought that CD and the booklet doesn't give any discographical data apart from Leonard Feather's liner notes which don't detail the personnel. Two sessions seem to be gathered on that album : 07/20/1957 ; 03/06/1959. Can anyone provide me with the information ? Thanks. Quote

mikeweil Posted November 16, 2003 Report Posted November 16, 2003 How's the music? Is this worth getting? Quote
Vincent, Paris Posted November 16, 2003 Author Report Posted November 16, 2003 (edited) If you like (our man) Billy Root (on baritone), Lennie Niehaus' (beautiful) arrangements and compositions, Mel Lewis' drumming, Stu Williamson, the underrated Harold Land and all those guys from the West Coast, I strongly recommend it. On the first session, Billly Root seems to take more solos than Jack Sheldon who sounds very fine, close to the Chet Baker of the time. According to the liner notes, two tunes composed and arranged by George Wallington were commissioned for Gerry Mulligan by Gene Norman, but unrecorded by him and were finally recorded by Sheldon and Root on the first date. And it's only $9.98 on GNP Crescendo website. This is the kind of secret gem you are happy to discover. Edited November 16, 2003 by Vincent, Paris Quote
