wolff Posted May 26, 2009 Report Posted May 26, 2009 I hung out with Redd a few times back in the 70's. He visited a friend up the block in Long Beach, CA. After the Getz thread I will not go into details. Quote
catesta Posted May 27, 2009 Report Posted May 27, 2009 Lamont Sanford: Did you get the liquor Rollo? Rollo Larson: No, I can't right now. Lamont Sanford: Why not? Rollo Larson: The store's still open! Quote
catesta Posted May 27, 2009 Report Posted May 27, 2009 Julio: Buenos Dias, Mr. Sanford. Fred Sanford: And beans and disease to you, too Quote
JSngry Posted May 27, 2009 Report Posted May 27, 2009 Rollo's last name was Larson? I did not know that! Quote
Soulstation1 Posted May 27, 2009 Author Report Posted May 27, 2009 I want to party with Rollo Fred hated Rollo BIG time Quote
connoisseur series500 Posted May 27, 2009 Report Posted May 27, 2009 Not only were Fred and Lamont terrific as lead players, but those side players were all great as well. Many of them toured with Redd during his travelling days. Aside from Aunt Esther and Rollo, Bubba was great, as was Esther's husband--name escapes me right now, but he was always on the bottle. Esther's bible-thumping church group were funny as well. Julio was excellent, and the two cops who regularly visited. Quote
Soulstation1 Posted May 27, 2009 Author Report Posted May 27, 2009 (edited) Woodrow was married to Queen Kong King's first wife according to Fred Woodrow stopped drinking after Esther and Woodrow adopted a kid Woodrow also played the town drunk in Good Times Edited May 28, 2009 by Soulstation1 Quote

JSngry Posted June 19, 2009 Report Posted June 19, 2009 But wait there's more... Rudy Ray Moore ain't got NOTHIN' on LaWanda... Quote
JSngry Posted June 19, 2009 Report Posted June 19, 2009 Not only were Fred and Lamont terrific as lead players, but those side players were all great as well. Many of them toured with Redd during his travelling days. Yeah, that's the thing...most of those folks weren't people who had spent their years hanging around trying to get acting gigs. They were very well-seasoned club/theatre/etc performers. You think LaWanda Page just all of a sudden learned to tell dirty jokes so she could captialize on Aunt Esther? Hardly! Actually, I remember seeing LaWanda and Redd on either Merv or Dinah Shore back in the day, and they had an old promo pic of LaWanda as a shake dancer! All I'm sayin', and I know it goes without saying, is that when you're watching Sanford & Son, you're not watching a TV show, you're watching a comedy revue featuring some verterans from a life, time, and place that was every bit as real as it was unknown to all but those who were in it. And btw - does the announcer on those Lawanda comedy albums sound like Bubbles Whitman to y'all? Quote
