Jim R Posted November 14, 2003 Report Posted November 14, 2003 For some time, I've been meaning to track down more of Parlan's work (especially as a leader) on Steeplechase, as well as a few other labels such as Enja, Soul Note, and Storyville. I tried a search here for discussions about this, but only came up with two threads- one about his Blue Note recordings, and one about the Mosaic issue of same. So, I'd like to hear some comments about Parlan's work for other labels, from the 70's forward. I have the following by Horace as a leader: ARRIVAL (with Idrees Sulieman-trumpet, flugelhorn, Bent Jaedig-tenor, Hugo Rasmussen-bass, Ed Thigpen-drums) NO BLUES (with N.H.O.P.-bass, Tony Inzalaco-drums) HI FLY (with Doug Raney-guitar, Wilbur Little-bass) All are outstanding, with NO BLUES being my current favorite. It dates from 1975, and everyone seems to be at the peak of their powers. Great playing by all, and excellent sound. Parlan sounds so comfortable with whatever material he selects, and this one has a nice overall balance of intensity, relaxed swing, and utter loveliness. On top of that, N.H.O.P. always grabs me, perhaps more than any other bassist of that era. I'm especially interested in hearing more p/b/d trios, as well as piano solos. Anybody out there have some of his other titles? Quote
brownie Posted November 16, 2003 Report Posted November 16, 2003 I have the solo piano album recorded in 1983 in Berlin on the Jazzbuhne label. Parlan plays standards like 'No Greater Love' and 'Over the Rainbow' on that one. Very good concert. The CD also has one track by a Mal Waldron-led trio. Quote
Dan Gould Posted November 16, 2003 Report Posted November 16, 2003 Well, further away from trio or solo, I have Glad I Found You which has a front line of Eddie Harris and Thad Jones. Quite nice. Quote
Tom in RI Posted November 16, 2003 Report Posted November 16, 2003 There's also an 8 and a half minute piano solo by Parlan recorded in 1975 on the Booker Ervin lp on Enja, Lament For Booker Ervin. Quote
robviti Posted November 16, 2003 Report Posted November 16, 2003 I recently picked up a copy of Parlan's cd Little Esther, a quartet date on Soul Note featuring baritonist Per Goldschmidt. I wasn't particuarly impressed at first, but this recording has definately grown on me. Quote
fent99 Posted November 17, 2003 Report Posted November 17, 2003 The solo piece on Lament for Booker Ervin is a great piece (and maybe better than the music that precedes it on the CD) My favourite record of Parlan is a duet album with Archie Shepp called Goin Home on Steeplechase. Magnificent! Quote
