Van Basten II Posted May 13, 2009 Report Posted May 13, 2009 First of all, glad to be back, let's hope i can contribute in a positive fashion the next few weeks, unfortunately it won't be with this thread... My computer had its share of problems lately, had to reinstall Windows, prior to that, i was subscribing to Symantec Norton for my antivirus protection. However it seems to be gone, to make it worse, the renewal mail i had from them to prove it was also deleted in the reinitialisation of my computer seems i lost all my previously received mail. So anybody has any idea what can i do to get back my already paid antivirus, they don't seem to be easy to reach, we can chat with them only during day business hour and i'm not available at that time. If you bought a package from a shop then you should be able to reinstall it easily. If you bought it online then I have no idea what would help. I'd suggest that you forget about Norton. it won't protect you from a serious virus attack.I used to use it and the first time my pc was seriously attacked it was useless in cleaning out virus. If I were you I'd use Avast! which is available as freeware and is much better than Norton. http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html Quote
Van Basten II Posted May 13, 2009 Author Report Posted May 13, 2009 Thanks mate, am trying it right now. Quote
Jim Alfredson Posted May 13, 2009 Report Posted May 13, 2009 Yeah, Norton and McAfee suck it. AVG has a free version I've been using for years. It's great and not a resource hog, unlike Norton. Quote
king ubu Posted May 13, 2009 Report Posted May 13, 2009 I've been using AntiVir (free - is that the same as AVG?) ever since Norton almost freaked up my computer completely (it was the 2006 or 2007 version). Some with more knowledge about such things than I told me that Norton upon installation spreads stuff all over your computer and can indeed do considerable damage and freak up all your settings in the worst case. I had my computer setup a new after that and never used Norton anymore... (and I wasn't even mad for paying for a year more than I'd actually used it, the relief when things were working again was too big for that!) Quote

I've been using AVG "free" for a long time now as well, it's really, really good and well, free. You can't go wrong. :tup AVG Free. Quote
king ubu Posted May 13, 2009 Report Posted May 13, 2009 I have the free version from here: http://www.avira.com/en/pages/index.php Quote
JSngry Posted May 13, 2009 Report Posted May 13, 2009 I'm using Trend Micro PC-cillin, came w/the machine. Any opinions on this product? Quote
Tom Storer Posted May 13, 2009 Report Posted May 13, 2009 I've been using AntiVir (free - is that the same as AVG?) No, AntiVir is not the same as AVG. I started using AntiVir recently after reading rave reviews in consumer computer magazines. It seems to work just fine. Only drawback is that when it downloads updates it pops up a window encouraging you to buy the Pro version. Quote

Yeah, in if you then hit ALT + F4, instead of closing that pop-up, it closes the other window you've been working in... but other than that to my knowledge, I've had no problems with viruses or anything for all the time I've been using it. The only (slight) drawback is that it doesn't check emails, so you have to manually have attachments checked if you don't trust the person who sent them. Quote
catesta Posted May 13, 2009 Report Posted May 13, 2009 I'm using Trend Micro PC-cillin, came w/the machine. Any opinions on this product? We just installed this on all of our computers after paying a small fortune on new network/server gear at the office. The consultant dude said it is the shit. Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted May 13, 2009 Report Posted May 13, 2009 My PCs are so screwed up I bought an iMac. The PCs are still messed up. Quote
RDK Posted May 13, 2009 Report Posted May 13, 2009 I've been using Norton for years w/o a problem. It's almost free if you time it right with rebates, etc. The latest version (360 - v.3 iirc) is also much faster and less memory intensive than past versions. Quote
Van Basten II Posted May 16, 2009 Author Report Posted May 16, 2009 By the way, can someone tell me how to configure Windows that when it opens up, i don't have to log myself in Quote
Jim Alfredson Posted May 16, 2009 Report Posted May 16, 2009 What version of Windows? XP? Vista? Win98? Quote
