Steve Davis on drums?

Yeah, there's another Steve Davis who plays drums.

I got to play with her a few weeks ago (she is on the jazz faculty at the Univ. of North Florida). Very nice player as well as a very nice lady.

Just curious, TM, what don't you like about the DVD? (I haven't seen it).

Yes, I'm familiar with his work.

What Marcello said.

Oops, I now see what you meant, Skid. I thought you meant you hadn't heard of him. :rhappy:

Also, what exactly is meant by "too white"? Is there "just enough white'"? Although I've never heard "white" used in descriptive praise, so one might assume any "white" is not good. Is there "too black", too?

I do think I understand what is implied, and it is a commonly used critical term. I'm just not sure how to deal with/interpret it sometimes. :)

I think I understand what Marcello is saying, but I don't think I'd call it "too white".

I'd be more inclined to say "File Under: New Age".

And that is not meant to be a put down -- it is what it is, and I simply don't care for it. I'm also interested to hear TM's thoughts.

How about not enough SOUL, or lack there of?

I've heard and met her since my buddy Jay Anderson played bass in her trio for 10 years.

Now Jay, is a SOUFUL player!

That I understand, even with the missing L. ;)

And yes, Jay is a MF!

BTW, I'm not disagreeing with the assessment in this particular case, I'm just curious about that term, having heard it used forever.

I'm not a big fan, but I think "new age" is unfair.

This is her first record without her old trio... It's a quartet record with Randy Brecker on trumpet, George Mraz on bass and Anthony Pinciotti on drums..

Overall it was good... not great...

I have always liked her stuff... I think I figured out my issue.... She always plays with a little restraint....Most of the tunes she plays(and composes) or have a medium tempo (not fast, not slow) or are ballads... Don't get me wrong... I've seen her perform 2 or 3 times and I have all of her recordings... and overall I do think she's a very good piano player and an excellent composer...

It's just that I've never seen her (or heard her) play in a very fast or unrestrained manner....

The new record is a CD with a live DVD performance along with some interviews from the band....

She comes out of a classical music background, though been playing jazz for years. Like the way Randy Brecker plays "Wrapped Around Your Finger." He can deal a pop melody like this with authenticity and is able to find some beauty in what is otherwise, lyrically, anyway, a rather unattractive song.

I like her music a lot. In concert, it made more sense to me. She gets more intense and compelling, the slower and softer she plays, in my opinion. She has her own style which I connect with.

Just wanted to let it be known that not everyone out there has a negative or lukewarm view of her music.

I just wish she would really stretch out sometimes....

  • 2 weeks later...

The difference between the DVD and the CD... is that the DVD has the songs in a different order with longer versions played in front of a studio audience...

She had a CD/DVD release on her last record "Live."

I like the format personally and wish more artists would do it... It doesn't raise the cost of the purchase that much....
