jazzhound Posted May 3, 2009 Report Posted May 3, 2009 recently picked up an original pressing of this on vinyl and am mesmerized. Previously only listened to him on cd. Is this his best or is it the vinyl that is upping the enjoyment level? don't know if I should try and get the Mosaic box. any thoughts? Quote
mjzee Posted May 3, 2009 Report Posted May 3, 2009 I really enjoyed the Mosaic box, and can recommend it. I think I liked the sessions more for the sidemen than for Parlan, though - he just seems to have a few basic variations of his style. So I'd also look at BNs where he's a sideman, such as the Stanley Turrentines. Sometimes a person doesn't have to be a leader to add a certain something. Quote

Soul Stream Posted May 3, 2009 Report Posted May 3, 2009 Being mesmerized by Us3 is universal. That trio and that record in particular had a lot of magic... Quote
AndrewHill Posted May 3, 2009 Report Posted May 3, 2009 U3 is a good record. I wouldn't say it overwhelmed me, and I haven't played for years, but when I do put it on, I wonder why I don't play it enough. It's one of those dates that just slips through the cracks. So far, I would say "On the Spur of the Moment" is my favorite date, largely for the appearance of Tommy Turrintine. Quote
B. Goren. Posted May 3, 2009 Report Posted May 3, 2009 don't know if I should try and get the Mosaic box. any thoughts? IMHO, Parlan's SteepleChase recordings are much better than his BN's. At least the trio sessions. Quote
clifford_thornton Posted May 3, 2009 Report Posted May 3, 2009 (edited) An original of Us Three... Edited May 3, 2009 by clifford_thornton Quote
Soulstation1 Posted May 3, 2009 Report Posted May 3, 2009 I dropped the ball on the HP mosaic set Quote
clifford_thornton Posted May 3, 2009 Report Posted May 3, 2009 Hope it didn't do too much damage... Quote
Peter Friedman Posted May 4, 2009 Report Posted May 4, 2009 don't know if I should try and get the Mosaic box. any thoughts? IMHO, Parlan's SteepleChase recordings are much better than his BN's. At least the trio sessions. I share the view that while the Parlan Blue Note recordings are damn good, the many sessions he did for Steeplechase are even better. Quote
Popkin Posted May 5, 2009 Report Posted May 5, 2009 I picked up the Mosaic on Ebay right after it went out of print, and I enjoyed it a lot. The albums with Stanley Turrentine are particularly great. Speakin' My Piece is an absolute classic. Quote
ASNL77 Posted May 5, 2009 Report Posted May 5, 2009 Another for 'Speakin' m y Piece' and 'On the Spur of the Moment'. Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted May 5, 2009 Report Posted May 5, 2009 (edited) Another for 'Speakin' m y Piece' and 'On the Spur of the Moment'. I'd say these two and Us Three are the "pick of the litter" of the Blue Notes. The SteepleChase recordings are fine, indeed, but another kettle of fish. edit to say the opening track on BN 4037 is about the best opening track ever. Whatever follows can't fail, with mucho thanks to Rudy. Edited May 5, 2009 by Chuck Nessa Quote
JohnS Posted May 6, 2009 Report Posted May 6, 2009 Interest stimulated. I'll be playing US Three later today. Quote
jazzhound Posted May 10, 2009 Author Report Posted May 10, 2009 picked up an original pressing of Movin and Groovin Parlan's 1st Blue Note lp. Not half as good as Us Three. Al Harewood seems to be the difference. And what a sound Rudy got on him. Is Us Three available on cd also? Quote
AndrewHill Posted May 10, 2009 Report Posted May 10, 2009 Is Us Three available on cd also? Yes, it was a Conn about 10 years ago or so and its been OOP for roughly about the same time. Quote
