jazztrain Posted May 2, 2009 Report Posted May 2, 2009 Not sure where to post this or if someone else has already. Here's a link to a review in the New York Times about a Sun Ra exhibit in Philadelphia. http://www.nytimes.com/2009/05/01/arts/des...20ra&st=cse Quote
Chalupa Posted May 2, 2009 Report Posted May 2, 2009 I work about a two minute walk from the ICA. I went to the show on Thursday. Pretty cool but, I'm not sure if I would make a special trip to Philly just to see it. It's a small show and I would guesstimate that the album covers(and related material) make up about 50% of the show. Also, sad to say but some of the material is rapidly disintegrating. For instance, the original painting that was used for "Jazz in Silhouette" is crumbling. A large part of the lower right hand corner is broken off. Quote
BFrank Posted May 2, 2009 Report Posted May 2, 2009 That was a great review. I wish it was a closer than 3,000 miles to check it out. Quote
ghost of miles Posted May 3, 2009 Report Posted May 3, 2009 I wanted to go see this when it was originally on display in Chicago. There's a good book based around it as well. Quote
BFrank Posted May 4, 2009 Report Posted May 4, 2009 Maybe this is a case where the book is better than the exhibit. Quote
clifford_thornton Posted May 4, 2009 Report Posted May 4, 2009 Well, it is from an archives and sometimes those types of collections can be hard to exhibit. I have the book and it's very nice indeed. Quote
Chalupa Posted May 4, 2009 Report Posted May 4, 2009 Yes there is definitely more in the book than is on display. Quote
Adam Posted May 4, 2009 Report Posted May 4, 2009 From a friend: Here's the exhibition catalog: http://www.press.uchicago.edu/presssite/me...;bookkey=227185 Another good book edited by Corbett: http://www.amazon.com/Wisdom-Sun-Polemical...r/dp/0945323077 Interesting symposium they had in connection w/the exhibit in Chicago http://www.hydeparkart.org/4833/symposium/ And a link to the ICA's Sun Ra info: http://www.icaphila.org/exhibitions/sunra.php Quote
sheldonm Posted May 11, 2009 Report Posted May 11, 2009 I wanted to go see this when it was originally on display in Chicago. There's a good book based around it as well. Saw it in Chicago with Henry Grimes, Margaret, Roy Campbell and Chad Taylor. Michael Wiess was in town as well and stopped in. It was pretty cool. m Quote
chewy-chew-chew-bean-benitez Posted May 11, 2009 Report Posted May 11, 2009 NY Times did an article last week about it Quote

Enterprise Server Posted May 29, 2009 Report Posted May 29, 2009 Nice! I wish I could attend the exhibit. Seen Sun Ra before in San Diego a few times and met him. Visionary without questions. Quote
