robviti Posted April 27, 2009 Report Posted April 27, 2009 This was the first leader date for both Shepp and Dixon. It's short but very good. Has it ever been remastered and reissued? Archie Shepp - Bill Dixon Quartet Bill Dixon (tp) Archie Shepp (ts) Don Moore (b -1,2,4) Reggie Workman (b -3) Paul Cohen (d -1,2,4) Howard McRae (d -3) NYC, October, 1962 1. 63-114 Trio Savoy MG 12178 2. 63-115 Quartet - 3. 63-116 Peace - 4. 63-117 Somewhere - * Archie Shepp-Bill Dixon Quartet (Savoy MG 12178) LP also released on BYG as "Peace" (BYG 529101) LP Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted April 27, 2009 Report Posted April 27, 2009 No. Dixon leased the tape to Savoy and supposedly reclaimed it. Very nice date. I bought it as a new release while in college. Quote
clifford_thornton Posted April 27, 2009 Report Posted April 27, 2009 It's excellent, indeed. I find his work since more engaging, but on its own terms this is a very strong LP. I'm not sure he even still has the tapes, as a lot of reels of his earlier work have been lost (Silva/Dixon duos, for starters). Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted April 27, 2009 Report Posted April 27, 2009 Not sure he ever "soloed" better. His vision of music in general may have developed but not his solos in my estimation. He packed more stuff into a shorter time back then. YMDV. Quote
clifford_thornton Posted April 28, 2009 Report Posted April 28, 2009 Yeah, you might be right. At least as far as more "traditional" dates/contexts go. Can't be a "shrike" all the time. Quote
JohnS Posted April 28, 2009 Report Posted April 28, 2009 Wonderful record, one for the desert island. It opened my ears to some free-er sounds. I still have my original copy bought at the time. Quote
clifford_thornton Posted April 28, 2009 Report Posted April 28, 2009 It's funny, I gave it a spin last night for the first time in a while and his playing is like night and day from what he's done in subsequent years. At the same time, the music - and soloing on his part - is very, very clear. He's got a pretty complete conception (i.e., doing exactly what he wanted to do/could do at the time), even if it would change over the ensuing years. Thanks for the refresher, Chuck. Quote
relyles Posted April 28, 2009 Report Posted April 28, 2009 This looks like something I would like to hear. I checked www.gemm.com and they have the LP listed for $289. A little beyond my budget in these tough economic time. There is another BYG LP listed on amazon titled Consequences. Anyone have any idea what that is? Quote

That's a reissue of a 1964 Savoy album that featured Dixon with a larger ensemble on one side, and Shepp with the New York Contemporary Five on the other. It's a very good album which, unlike the Shepp/Dixon quartet date, has been reissued several times, including a CD reissue from 2001. Quote

I was wondering whether it was possibly the earlier recording under another name. Since the LP is only $5.00 I would have picked it up if it was. Quote
clifford_thornton Posted April 28, 2009 Report Posted April 28, 2009 The BYG reissue of the quartet is entitled Peace. Quote
Guest Bill Barton Posted May 1, 2009 Report Posted May 1, 2009 Looks like I'll need to track this one down... Thanks especially to Chuck and JohnS for the glowing recs. An aside: When I Googled it I found a truly hilarious "misprint" for the musician credits (now I can't recall where this originated from.) In any case, they had "Howard McGhee" rather than "Howard McRae" listed as the drummer on "Peace." Yikes! Quote
ghost of miles Posted May 1, 2009 Report Posted May 1, 2009 I used "Peace" from this album for the upcoming "Ornette Coleman Songbook" Night Lights show. Quote
Chalupa Posted May 1, 2009 Report Posted May 1, 2009 So are the BYGs from the original tapes?? I'm assuming the Savoy issues have better sound? Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted May 1, 2009 Report Posted May 1, 2009 So are the BYGs from the original tapes?? I'm assuming the Savoy issues have better sound? Not sure of the BYG sources (long story some other time), but my original Savoy pressing was so shitty I burned a copy of the BYG for listening. YMMV. Quote
AndrewHill Posted May 2, 2009 Report Posted May 2, 2009 Yeah, this is a bummer, because after the Atlantic/Savoy cd reissue of the Dixon/Shepp date, I really really want to hear this date. I wish Bill (or whoever has the tapes) would give the fans a "legal" chance to hear this date. It kind of reminds me of the Ornette Impulse's that we'll never get to hear on cd Quote
Misterioso Posted February 6, 2018 Report Posted February 6, 2018 This album has been reissued on vinyl in 2017 by the Italian re-issue label "Jeanne Dielman". Has anyone here experience with the quality of the re-issues of this label? I don't find any information online. Quote
clifford_thornton Posted February 6, 2018 Report Posted February 6, 2018 Re-issue label is 'pushing it' for Jeanne Dielman -- they are bootlegs. Quote

JohnS Posted February 8, 2018 Report Posted February 8, 2018 Just to repeat an earlier post - this is a terrific record. Highly recommended.. Quote
