flat5 Posted April 21, 2009 Report Posted April 21, 2009 Just got the news from Jay Corre. Some info on Carmen Leggio: http://www.saxontheweb.net/SML/GreatSaxman.html Quote
BillF Posted April 21, 2009 Report Posted April 21, 2009 He's on some of my Maynard Ferguson records. Quote
king ubu Posted April 21, 2009 Report Posted April 21, 2009 What, anyone has favourite Maynard records? Didn't know that exists... I only knew Leggio from the Woody Herman Philips Select until I recently found Eddie Bert's Fresh Sound album "The Human Factor" (also feat. Jerry Dodgion, Duke Jordan, Ray Drummond and Mel Lewis). Fine player - r.i.p. Quote
fasstrack Posted April 21, 2009 Report Posted April 21, 2009 Drag. He was living in Westchester, looked a little raggedy but playing very good. He made a nice recording as a leader not that long ago. Ballads mostly, and possibly w/strings. Always sad to lose one of the good ones......... Quote

Is that (part of) the period covered in the Mosaic? I'm quite sure I'd bought it but there just were too many of them still around and of considerably more interest to me back in my early Mosaic-buying days! But that indeed seems to have been a great band! Quote

AllenLowe Posted April 21, 2009 Report Posted April 21, 2009 (edited) just wanted to mention that I knew Carmen back in the 1990s and took some lessons with him and he was one of the nicest people I ever knew. Also one of the greatest saxophonists - he released a few self-produced LPs way back, with a bad flute player, but on which his alto playing was phenomenal, some of the best post-bop playing I've EVER heard. Brilliant stuff, and I'm very saddened by this death - Edited April 21, 2009 by AllenLowe Quote
Guest Bill Barton Posted April 21, 2009 Report Posted April 21, 2009 R.I.P. I fondly recall a couple of the albums he made under his own name from the "dark ages" of my radio career (i.e. the 1970s - the pre-digital days.) I played the heck out of 'em! He was a marvelous improviser with a *great* sound. Quote
Stereojack Posted April 21, 2009 Report Posted April 21, 2009 What, anyone has favourite Maynard records? Didn't know that exists... Very keen on Maynard in the 50s, which is when Carmen was with him. I first discovered Carmen on Maynard's recording of "Frame For the Blues". A great track, and some booting tenor! Also like his LP's on Famous Door, Daybreak, & Progressive. The ones on his own label looked cheesy, but he played well on them! Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted April 21, 2009 Report Posted April 21, 2009 The lps on Famous Door and Progressive are now coupled on a Progressive cd. A more recent project is available from Mighty Quinn. Quote
JSngry Posted April 21, 2009 Report Posted April 21, 2009 Any ideas on how to get the side on Golden Crest? I first encountered him on Woody Herman:1964 where he easily held his own with Sal Nistico. No easy feat, that. Quote
Big Beat Steve Posted April 22, 2009 Report Posted April 22, 2009 Any ideas on how to get the side on Golden Crest? My question too. Been scouring the usual sites for it but missed the item a couple of times, unfortunately. I'd been hipped to that (as an "obscure item" of interest for my collection) by a friend who had a 45 (promo, I guess) of the "Swing with SML" (I think) but lost it unfortuinately when his kid (still a toddler then) inadvertently stepped on it ... ouch!). You beat me to it, just ordered some Mighty Quinn from Trueblue after their mail yesterday, and now browsing their site I saw this one - is it good, does anyone here know it? edit: interesting, the Ralph Lalama and Steve Marcus discs, as well as that Carmen Leggio disc, are all by ts/g/b/d quartets! (The Leggio has Joe Cohn! So it should indeed be interesting at least!) Edited April 22, 2009 by king ubu Quote
king ubu Posted April 22, 2009 Report Posted April 22, 2009 Ok, I guess I'll soon know... ordered the Leggio, Marcus & Leviev CDs from Mighty Quinn - 36$ all included, not a bad offer! Quote
king ubu Posted May 13, 2009 Report Posted May 13, 2009 Just finishing a first spin of the Mighty Quinn Lovely album! Leggio has that old-fashioned sound that is at the same time heavy, full-bodied and meaty, yet light as a feather... you don't get that kind of sound with younger players any more... Joe Cohn on guitar is great, and the rhythm team of Rick Petrone/Joe Corsello hold their own (are they sort of Mighty Quinn's home rhythm section? They're also on the Steve Marcus and Ralph Lalama discs. Quote
