I was unfamiliar with this group until very recently. Just picked up the "Someday My Prince Will Come" CD yesterday on Columbia with the edition of Hank along with Richard Davis on bass and bro Elvin on drums.

Also just noticed the greats that have been a part of this band...

Any recommendations?

That was the first GJT album I got.

Agreed - one of the best, too.

BTW, someone (Hank?) must be a baseball fan because several of the covers are photos of baseball players.

All of the 88s CDs sound wonderful and you can pick them up on eBay pretty cheaply. The LPs and SACDs are starting to get pricey. I think I paid $6 with shipping for Someday My Prince Will Come. Autumn Leaves is my favorite.

I have close to a complete collection of CDs/SACDs by the Great Jazz Trio. They all have Hank Jones on piano, but the rhythm sections vary and some have guests. The labels that that they are on include Alfa Jazz, Baybridge,

Denon, East Wind, East World, Eighty Eights, Somethin' Else, TDK

The GJT albums with Tony Williams are interesting. It's nice to hear a dynamic drummer like Tony pushing Hank, who sounds invigorated having to tangle with him.

There is a nice remastered compilation of the studio sides with Ron Carter and Tony Williams titled Objects Appear Closer.

I would grab that and the live at the Village Vanguard sides.

I was wondering if it is v. good/excellent or just ok, I heard a few samples from it and would put it in the ok category. Common or garden hard bop.

Samples are sometimes misleading IMO. I have it and have always liked it. It's beyond OK; it's very good, I would say.

It's not in the first rank of McLean albums, in my opinion. With that trio, and its track record of fine albums before that one, the addition of a giant on saxophone should have been a more memorable event, I think.

Agreed, but it is surely worth the $8 it costs to purchase new from Amazon (US) Marketplace. I purchased all of these Great Jazz Trio albums back in 2000 from Red Trumpet (remember them?) well before they came out domestically here in the states, and spent a pretty penny on them. AND was glad to do so. Now they can all be had for a song and a dance. So much so that it really isn't worth arguing about. ALL of the albums are worth a few bucks and several listens.

Just one man's opinion.
