JSngry Posted September 1, 2004 Report Posted September 1, 2004 I've got the Label M issue and am listening on my compruter speakers. STILL tenor. Quote
JSngry Posted September 1, 2004 Report Posted September 1, 2004 Although he might well be doing alto/tenor on the multi-horn parts. It's doable. Quote
Tony Pusey Posted September 2, 2004 Report Posted September 2, 2004 Tom Rapp/Pearls Before Swine- the Wizard of Is, double of unreleased works in progress/live stuff now available, if there are any other old timers out there. Quote
sidewinder Posted September 2, 2004 Report Posted September 2, 2004 Anyone know if '4 Men With Beards' will be putting out 180g vinyl of 'The Phantom', in the same way that they did with the Eddie Gales? sidewinder, Do you have the Eddie Gale reissues that 4 Men With Beards put out? I was about to pick up the CD versions on Water when I became aware of the vinyl versions that were out there. If you've got 'em, can you weigh in on how they sound? EDIT: (By the way - Midheaven Mailorder have these for a good price - $11.50! That's $3 cheaper than the CD...) street - I've got the 4MWB vinyl of 'Black Rhythm Happening' but have yet to pick up 'Getto Music'. 'BRH' sounds pretty nice in this reissue, can't compare it to the original but I would definitely say go for it. Well presented with good packaging, new liner notes and heavyish vinyl. Quote
sidewinder Posted September 2, 2004 Report Posted September 2, 2004 $11.50 is a great price.I paid about £15 for 'BRH' ! Quote

Thanks for the response, sidewinder. I bought both of these last night - just couldn't pass 'em up at that price. Total for both, including shipping, was ~$28. Quote
sidewinder Posted September 3, 2004 Report Posted September 3, 2004 No problem ! At that price I'll be tempted to pick up the 'Ghetto Music' myself. Just listening to 'Black Rhythm Happening' this morning. Sounds pretty nice in the heavy vinyl. Quote
jazzbo Posted September 3, 2004 Author Report Posted September 3, 2004 Sounds pretty damned nice in the Water cd reissue too! Quote
DrJ Posted September 6, 2004 Report Posted September 6, 2004 Thanks Master Sangrey, for your weighing in on the tenor/alto question - I'm with you. Quote
dova Posted March 17, 2008 Report Posted March 17, 2008 Hello All: I want to pickup one of the Eddie Gale Water CD's and was thinking Ghetto Music. Then if I like this, Black Rhythm Happenning next. Any advise for my first Eddie Gale purchase? Thanks! Dova Quote

Soul Stream Posted March 18, 2008 Report Posted March 18, 2008 The one thing I don't/didn't dig about the Water reissues is that they left out alternative/extra takes. Blue Note issued an alternate take of "Brother Soul" from Say It Loud on a Rare Grooves Comp. that Water didn't include. A pretty glaring omission since said track was badass and perhaps superior in some ways to the og version. Quote
Swinging Swede Posted March 18, 2008 Report Posted March 18, 2008 Even worse, there's an unissued tune, Red Top, from that session. Yes, unissued, not rejected. It should of course have been included. dova Posted March 21, 2008 Report Posted March 21, 2008 Got the EDDIE GALE Ghetto Music: WOW : In the vein of my all time favorite Max Roach groups including Fredom Now suite and It's Time. This music was way ahead of it's time. If you are curious, the vocals do not dominate and are used with taste in various parts of the album. As mentioned earlier, the cd sound is excellent and if you are into avanta garde jazz, this one is essential. Thanks Francis Wolff for bank rolling this out of his own pocket. I have a good feeling this will be out of print from Water in less than 6 months. Dova Quote
jazzbo Posted March 21, 2008 Author Report Posted March 21, 2008 Glad you got that dova! I love it as well. It's mate on the label is aslo very good, a little different but not in a bad way. Quote
clifford_thornton Posted March 22, 2008 Report Posted March 22, 2008 Yes, it's a favorite of mine as well. The plaintive guitar strumming and soft vocals by Joanne Gale at the beginning of "The Rain" really give you no idea what's in store. I'm not as big a fan of Black Rhythm Happening, but it's solid. Ghetto Music's a mind-melter, though. Quote
Chas Posted March 22, 2008 Report Posted March 22, 2008 Ghetto Music has the kind of cover that really makes you want to find out what kind of music is contained within ( in addition to making you want to watch The Omega Man again ) . I have absolutely no problem with any of the vocalizing/chanting , but I can't abide Eddie's trumpet playing Quote
AndrewHill Posted March 24, 2008 Report Posted March 24, 2008 I've added the two Gales to my wish list Quote
analogak Posted March 25, 2008 Report Posted March 25, 2008 the gales did not compell me to keep them. Quote
analogak Posted March 25, 2008 Report Posted March 25, 2008 as i said, i think water partially chose which albums to reissue based on the righteousness of the covers (ie soulful black women or to a lesser degree, men)...they should have based it on the music first. but i think these same soulful black folk do attract consumers so i guess it worked! clifford_thornton Posted March 25, 2008 Report Posted March 25, 2008 Ghetto Music's cover is beyond soulful, man. That's some druid shit right there! Quote
sidewinder Posted March 25, 2008 Report Posted March 25, 2008 (edited) Ghetto Music's cover is beyond soulful, man. That's some druid shit right there! Not to mention the Scoobie Doo lookalike hounds from hell. All it needed was Stonehenge in the background. Edited March 25, 2008 by sidewinder Quote
AndrewHill Posted March 28, 2008 Report Posted March 28, 2008 ...and if you like or already have that, then get Ghetto Music and proceed accordingly. Well, funny, I had Ghetto Music in my hand today and I went up to the counter to purchase it; they keep the cd's behind the counter so when he got it, I took a look-see and wouldn't you know that there was a big ol' scratch on it. Alas, I have to wait for another copy Quote
